    What do you say?

I have been having an ongoing conversation with a friend of mine that says bowling is a sport. I happen to disagree.

    Hi,

It is a fine line between a hobby/past time and a sport. Others to be considered I would assume are fishing, darts, pool/snooker, hunting etc. They don't include much physical exercise but they have sporting elements which is what I would regard as the definition.

    cheers

Bowling is just a game like checkers or chess, not a sport.

If bowling isn't a sport, then neither is golf. Sport is defined as "a game or competative activity..." (Oxford Ditionary)

    Cheers,

PastorSBC, are you possibly objecting to bowling as a sport because you might be implying that a bowler is an athlete? Just a thought.

I'd say bowling is a sport. However, I don't think anybody would say that a bowler is an athlete.

ccr that is a good point. I could possible concede that bowling is a sport. However I do not think I could ever say that a bowler is an athlete.

Yet I still have a hard time seeing an "activity" that takes place in smoke filled bars as a "sport" [IMG]

    Pastor,
We had a bowling alley (well, before it burned down) There was no smoke filled bar there (till it caught fire [IMG] ) . Just family bowling. A bowler may not be an athlete. But many athletes bowl. [IMG]

Yeah, I was thinking it's a sport because of the competition. Can get wild out there on the lanes. :D

Sport in the JD of 2005 (James Dictionary)

"Any physical activy that is not boring"

So therefore, no, it's not a sport. I would put bowling in the same category as golf, cricket, and pool.

Hey now that is personal! ;) :D Golf is a sport, you perform much better if you are an in shape athlete like Anika Sorenstam or Tiger Woods. Bowling doesn't matter as much. Thats why I know 80 yr. old women who can bowl great, but don't have the flexability to swing a golf club. [IMG]

However, it takes 12 excellent shots to bowl a 300, while it takes only ONE excellent (or lucky) swing to make a hole-in-one.

Many a bowler has achieved the ultimate in bowling, rolling a 300, and several have shot a 900 3-game series. But golfers are still swingin'away trying to achieve that perfect golf score, an 18.(For 18 holes, not one!)

I read where someone listed cricket as a non-sport. They have obviously never played cricket and have something against rounders and even baseball.

Hockey is one huge brawl, but some insist that is a sport also, and I shall allow that. Even darts takes skill and accuracy. I think some definitions of wot is a sport is too limited. The dictionaries are much broader in definitions.

Cheers, and if you can't play a sport; be one,

    Jim
