I usually watch the Super Bowl just for the commercials. Though yes, they have been more and more risque lately.

In the past few years since being saved, I have taped the game and watched it later on (again, mainly for the commercials). I did so in order to never miss Sunday Evening Service, which I definitely need to smoothly move into my work week. I have always joked that the only way I could miss Sunday Nights for the Super Bowl is if my beloved Seattle Seahawks ever made it! I thought that would never happen, but now, they may actually make it! But still, even if my Seahawks make it, I will still tape the game and not miss my Sunday Night at church.

</font>[/QUOTE]Good point. I guess you can just turn off the tv during commericals and the half time show.

Why should a church move an worship service, or a prayer meeting to reach someone else? Why is the church not out reaching someone else the other 160 hours of the week?

Get out there during the week and witness. I agree with mnw... we do not need a gimmick to win the lost. You cannot act like the world to win one to Christ. Light has no fellowship with darkness.

My first statement on the matter still stands.

For some interesting observations from early Christian History: Call up on the www: Tertullian: De Spectaculis, a summary; also Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol III, more Tertullian and the games, full text.

Christians have always had trouble with their carnality--the scripture says all of His disciples forsook Him and fled--when Jesus was arrested in a garden. Apostle Paul called the Christians at Corinth carnal and told them why. See Corinthians I and II.

    One cannot serve two masters.

I find it funny the assumptions people make. A church moves a service for another church event and that means that they are not reaching people the rest of the week and it means that they are dealing with carnality.

Despite the provision of humor that some have provided for you here...my last post remains unchallenged. Perhaps we have lost a beautiful thing that the old King James calls "shamefacedness." A truly sad commentary on the church today.

    Brother Max,

Many do not feel shamefacedness anymore. Man can reason out his own thoughts and actions and not take into consideration what, 'thus saith the Lord'.

We are not to bring the world into the church, but rather go out and minister to the world. And that does not mean becoming part of the world to reach the world. Like was posted earlier, we cannot join the mafia to reach the mafia.

I would not really have a problem moving, say, the Sunday evening service and getting every one to go do some door-to-door visitation instead.

But changing the service to watch a game I have a problem with.

But, we all know it is up to the individual pastor and church.

    Just my opinion.

A wise man once said that opinions are like arm pits, every one has them and they all stink!

Let's have some perspective....the whole reason church services are at the times they are are to accomodate something. Worship being at 11:00 here in the south was scheduled that way so farmers could do their Sun morning milking and feeding and have time to get ready and travel to church. Did these folks put God in second place to their cows? Why not have church service at 7am on Sunday morning? Is it because people love sleeping more than the Lord?

Many churches cancel one Wednesday night service per month...to have a business meeting, which is not found in Scripture. Yet some pitch a fit if you cancel a service to have a fellowship meal...which IS found in Scripture.

The traditions of men are now being exalted as the commands of God. Sad. Actually, rather pathetic.

It just occured to me that this topic is not sports-related, and if it is, only in a very cursory way. Reprise the theme song and roll the credits.
