Has anyone on the board been diagnosed with Spasmodic Dysphonia? I would like to hear from you if you don't mind sharing your experience with it.

I've not heard of it so had to look it up. I'm sorry that you're dealing with this!! I'm sure you've seen professionals about it. What kind of treatment are you doing?

Ann, there is no cure for SD. The only known treatment is Botox injections into the vocal folds. The treatment is ineffective on me. In most cases where it is effective, the injections have to be repeated anywhere from every three to six months.

I said Botox is the only treatment, but actually there is a surgical procedure that is minimally effective in some cases.

Yes, I have seen two doctors who specialize in treating SD and other speech disorders.

The good news is that my voice is crystal clear when I preach!

I also have spasmodic dysphonia (adductor). A very wise pastor friend told me once that if I allowed Him, "God would do far more with (and through) my broken voice than I could ever do for Him on my own with a healthy one." This has proven to be true over and over again. In case you haven't discovered it yet, the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association has great resources to educate and offer support, www.dysphonia.org . Unfortunately, there are no active support groups in your area (of which I am currently aware), but you could always check in to starting one. I found that meeting with others who understand the challenges that my unique voice offers helps me on my journey to learn how to cope well with SD.

I decided a few years ago to make the best of my situation. I agree with your pastor friend. The main challenge is dealing with the aggravations. Phone conversations are probably the greatest aggravation for me.

I am familiar with the national organization, and I devour the quarterly magazine. I have given some thought to the possibility of starting a support group in Alabama.
