I have seen parents cussing their children as they leave the parking lot of both Christian and public schools. I have been in the home of the home schooled who were so uneducated they were too ignorant to be ashamed.

Any school setting can misuse and abuse.

But, when a parent is involved, very few children fall under the term "at risk."

The rise and fall of children is determined totally by the parents, not the school.

There is just no excuse for a parent to say, "well, they just turned out bad." No, the parent didn't do their job.

This will seem a side note but it is really one of the major keys to successfully raising an educated child. Parents must show respect and love for each other. The greater the respect and love shown, the stronger the child will be both educationally and psychologically. Want a child who causes problems? Look at the home. Want a child who is too influenced by peers? Look at the home. What a child who is demonstrates little respect for others? Look at the home. I have never dealt with a child who skipped school who first hasn't "skipped home" either physically or emotionally.

So, what is important? This thread would indicate it as the school. But it is the home.

I think it is the parents perogative and God given Obligation to home school their children. They are the ones God will be holding accountable for their children.

If a parent chooses to homeschool, Christian School, or public school, he or she should be more than active in what their child is being taught.

I agree, when my son goes to public school you can best believe I'll be under the schools thumb making sure everything is kosher.-dar

quote:
I would like to hear your thoughts on public schools, christian schools and homeschooling.

Public Schools: I'm 17, I've never been in anything but public schools, not counting a catholic religious class my parents made me go to. Yes they teach stuff like evolution but so what, just because a child gets knowledge on what it is doesn't mean he's gonna see it as true. Remember the things they teach, pass the test, move forward.

Christian Schools: Never been in one, but the girl I love goes to one, and she seems just as smart as the next person.

Homeschooling: Meh. I don't think I would have enjoyed it. All my friends are going to this public/christian school and meeting new and interesting people, I'm at home with mom.

Well, FYI, my three oldest are homeschooled, just at the time they would be entering middle school. You would think that kids would miss their friends, miss meeting new and interesting people. However, this has not been the case with us. They love being home, they love being with their mama, and, in fact, my son's fourth grade teacher told him that we have a remarkable family (Praise the LORD) because our children love to be with their family and a part of their family. It is natural for children to be with their parents more than to be out socializing. To learn to be a part of society starts by learning to be a part of your family.

At any rate, my children still see their friends, and have opportunities to make new ones. And yet they are learning to become great friends with their siblings!

Hi Karen ~ If it were up to me, I would have had them home all through their schooling years. However, jut at the time when my oldest was going off to kindergarten, my youngest was born. My husband thought it would have been too much for me to handle . . . first year of homeschooling . . . a newborn . . . two 3 1/2 year olds . . . and a two year old! He was right! [IMG]

He thought it would be easier on me to enter them in school, and actually get them all there, then take them out one at a time to ease me into it.

Though I would have rather had them all home with me all along, I can't say that I'm unhappy with this arrangement. The way middle schools and high schools are today, I am glad they will be in a safe haven during those years.

I could work in a Christian school in my area that allows its workers to have their children in the school at no charge. We may take that route later, but at the moment things are working well this way.

At any rate, he really wasn't sold entirely on the idea of homeschooling, but over time has come to accept it. He has become quite involved in helping out in the mornings before he goes off to work.

A few years ago my mother had asked the counselors and officials and stuff about home-schooling, and she said it wasn't an option since many colleges and employers don't see completing home-schooling courses as actually finishing high school. Has this problem arisen in your area, or was my mother mis-informed or something?

Hi Jesse ~ Unfortunately your mother was misinformed. Though some colleges and universities try to make it more difficult for homeschoolers to enter their institutions (i.e. until recently, the University of Georgia required homeschoolers to take the SAT II eight times before they could be accepted), many others readily welcome them. I saw a list the other day of the colleges and universities that have accepted homeschoolers. It was a fairly extensive list.

I would never say that every child needs to be homeschooled. Christian school is an excellent option. However, they are quite expensive (esp. when you have more than a couple of kids), and homeschooling takes a great amount of effort or dedication. Some folks just can't handle that. Sometimes public school is a parent's only choice, and I don't hold that against them. However, I am an advocate in the continuing freedom for the parent's right to educate their child in the way they feel best.

Keeper, I think the above sums it very nicely.

I plan to send my son to public school. My thoughts on this are all ungodly teaching and living are outside of our homes, there is no way we will be able to keep our children from hearing and seeing things or even being influenced the wrong way. At some point in life they will be exposed a great deal to this stuff and I for one really want my son to learn how to handle himself with this subjects and know how to react to people and issues. I do not believe I am thrusting him into an ungodly world, I will have him come home at the end of the day with questions and that will be the time my husband and I can explain things to him and share godly views and teach him to respect no matter what we believe.

I have responded several times on other threads, so will just respond briefly to say
I send my kids to a great private school.
This does not isolate them from other kids in Scouts, etc.
But, LOL, I have to say, dealing with my
teenage and preteen boys, you must have a young son. Boys RARELY come home for deep chats with Mom about their experiences of the day. Don't rely on that as your window into his world in the future.

Karen, yeah I know many kids don't get into talking with the parents but I intend to deal with this in a different manner. I will bluntly ask him questions with his dad around and get him talking even at a young age so that when that time comes it will be a better chance of him opening up and if not then I promise his dad will be ready to deal with this too in talking to him.

  14. Public schools used to be great, a long long time ago. But the world has made them worse. I've gone to public school my whole life (I'm a freshman this year), and I have great Godly parents. Public school really is a great mission field and God can really test your faith and commitment towards him. But, I think Christan schools are wonderful also. You must consider that not all people have the money to send their kids to a Christian school. My parents never did, but I homeschool this year and may be able to go to a very good Christian school sometime in my high school years. And, sometimes parents put their kids in Christian school to shelter them from the world. You have to remember your kids can't be sheltered forever but will learn sooner or later when they are adults of how mean they world can be. I think and I know of some kids who have been in a the little nest of their parents and not exposed at all to the world. But overall, I think God should lead the parents in their decision to put their child or children in a Christian school or a public school. [IMG]

"The public school was at one time a place of higher education. Now it is a place of humanist indoctrination. Your Christian child has no business learning the religion of the heathen. If anyones child is in public school, take them out and save their souls!"

I was born and raised in public schools. They are a spiritual war ground and I can tell you that from exeperience. More than anything we need strong Christian teenagers in public schools today. We don't abandon the lost we reach out to them.

I was part of a group called "Frist Priority" one of my jobs as a leader was to get publicity out there and advertise the group. I made a gaint poster probably 6' x 2' that said "Praise the Lord" and advertized the group. As you can imagine that stirred up some arguments. In fact it got so big the building principals had a meeting to decide what should be done. It was our right to put ads up. So in the end they had to change the rules- no ads bigger than an 8x11 sheet of paper (this upset the football team to say the least).

What happened in the student body was a lot of talk about faith in Jesus Christ. I'd like to think some made decisions but i don't know for sure.

As a Christian in a public high school and having a Christian English teacher I decided to make all the essays I could about Christian topics. My big 15 page essay was on the Christian life in modern society. I had to also teach the class for 40 minutes. I presented the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ right there in front of my English class. (yes a few mouths did drop). I ended up getting marked down because I did a whole lot less presenting than I did answering questions about our faith. It went so long I was sitting there talking to people about Jesus after class :D

You see it is important to have Christians in our public schools. I'm not saying any of this to bring praise to myself. I don't deserve it. I was only able to do what I did through God.

    Until Next Post, Adam

    Hey Bob,

Thank You for your blanket condemnation of everyone in the public schools...including Christian teachers like myself who work very hard to be a light in the darkness. But condemnation and judgmentalism tends to be the order of the day for Baptists...doesn't it (Micah 6:8).

I think a good conclusion to this post might be that we have to look into our own hearts and make sure they are right with God then we have to make the best decision for our children according to the will of God.

Every situation is not right for every family while homeschooling may not be good for one and public shool may not be good for another.

Now I am going on a limb here and will probably get some raised eyebrows for saying this it almost seems like the Christian school is the happy medium. I had my children in a Christian school for three years and they have good memories from that experience and so do I. Not too much exposure to the world and not too much sheltering. I am not saying that all homeschooled children are homeschooled but that is the first thing we are always accused of.

Now don't get me wrong but I think sometimes there is too much exposure to the world for our children there are things at 5 and 6 they don't need to know about but many have learned in the public school. I do homeschool and I do feel at times my children don't get out enough with a baby it is very difficult. They have one another and when the church doors are opened we are there. They also have friends and other activities that we are involved in.

I am just saying that the Christian school there was exposure to the world we have several who were not saved in our school and there are plenty of activities (in my opinion too many). So we need to base our preference for our children's education on the will of God for our lives and the lives of our children.

Does that make sense to you all?

What good is a Christian school when the world, the lost world, is sending their children as well?
