Hi jabezguy, welcome to the Baptist Board.

I'm wondering about your statement. What do you mean that "c.s. lewis and harry potter are about the same"?

  3. If you are a Spirit-filled Christian, please tell me what spirit is in you because it is sure not the Holy Spirit because He would bare witness against Harry Potter. Harry Potter was written by a heathen woman who does not know God. C. S. Lewis was a Christian who loved God. What is alike about the two?
Harry Potter has real wichcraft and pagan symbols in it. It teaches real magic. If it did not have real witchcraft then why have we not heard one witch or pagan speak out against it?
The woman who wrote Harry Potter studied pagan mythology in England so what she puts in her books is real. C.S. Lewis studied the Bible.
How can you say a heathen and a Christian are just alike? As stated in the other post C.S. Lewis's book is a picture of Christianity.
Harry Potter is just about witchcraft and it makes it appealing so witches don't look so bad.
Harry Potter is a evil book and should not be endorsed by Christins.

Where have I heard this completely false argument before? I mean really -- word for word. Was it on this board or somewhere else?

Witches and pagans have spoken about Harry Potter, and many have confirmed that what is portrayed in the books is completely inaccurate. I've never known a witch to shout out a jelly-legs curse or anything like that. Now, witches have spoken out in favor of the positive representation of witches in the Potter books, but that's very different than confirming what Potter and his friends do is an accurate portrayal of witches.

But even so, the form of such an argument is illogical. Even if no witch or pagan had spoken that the books are not an accurate representation of what they do, to say that their silence is assent is not a good enough argument.

If you really want to explore this issue, perhaps you might learn a little about modern witchcraft. I think you might surprise yourself how very different the Hogwarts world is from the witches' world.

Because as we all know, mythology is true and real.

I think the point being attempted is that stories that include magic and witches are stories including magic and witches, no matter who wrote them. That might be an interesting discussion. Are stories including magic and witchcraft that have been written by Christians okay? If so, why the inconsistency?

    "The Harry Potter Controversy:

Does Harry Potter promote Witchcraft or the Occult?

    by Daniel Eaton

    Introduction:

John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and TRUTH”. Verse 17 continues, “For the Law was given through Moses; grace and TRUTH were realized through Jesus Christ.” We should be able to give a response to our faith with gentleness and respect ...including a respect for the truth. John 3:21 says "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

Taking an honest look at something requires looking at both sides of an issue, not just both sides as portrayed by one side. This is a lesson that I learned by watching Rob Bowman. This avoids mis-characterizing the opposing position and the Straw Man argument. A perfect example of this would be studying creation v. Evolution by getting all your info from ICR.

Because it is important to keep a reputation of integrity in our apologetics study, we will be looking at the Harry Potter controversy from a couple of different sides."

From what I recall about Disney, they support homosexuals. And homosexuality is a sin, no? And you're saying Harry Potter isn't much different from Disney films? Disney films have become violent, use ugly language, use lewd scenes, and many other things which children should not be subjected to. And this is only from viewing the advertisements!! So Harry Potter is not evil? Violence in Disney films, violence in potter films... no, not much different, I suppose!
The Bible clearly says witchcraft is evil. And that we are to shun it, and that witches are not to be allowed to live. And yet so many "Christians" are embracing it? It's sickening.

that article made me laugh made me cry - it was better then CATS

Im not speaking from Ouija board foolishness - Im speaking from other experience - at times Im oversensitive - and others undersensitive

If you know that person tell him/her to walk his astral self on a long walk off a short pier.

Or make far more careful inquiries into that one's background - I claim not knowledge of every sect of witchcraft for there are many - I claim not to know there dark secrets - and secrets there may be - I study what's important: The Bible and use that as my guide as to what's wrong and what's right.

Although I did find the other link posted mildly interesting - I believe some aspects of that chart are incorrect but thats ok ;)

Regardless of accuracy or inaccuracy in the Harry Potter material, they are attracting children and teens to witchcraft and the occult. In this sense they are being mounted as a direct frontal assault on Christianity, and I am amazed that so many people miss that.

    Taken from an e-mail:

"The Chamber of Secrets" is far "darker" spiritually & more bloody. Demons are seen flitting across the screen regularly. Some of the obvious features of Satanism within the movie are:

    1. Harry is boldly proclaimed to be a "wizard", which is firmly and boldly prohibited by God! [Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 18:10-12]
    2. Dobby the Elf is a Familiar Spirit, also forbidden by God in these verses, above.
    3. Demons called "Pixies" are released out of a bird cage, loosed upon the children. Their physical appearance is hideous, seemingly straight from the Pit.
    4. Physical Transformation is depicted, upon taking a potion. This phenomenon is possible within the realm of Witchcraft, but only through a powerful ritual and human sacrifice.
    5. Levitation of people and objects is depicted, again possible in Witchcraft through ritual and human sacrifice.
    6. The Mandrake Plant is depicted as being a powerful ingredient with which to make potions. This accurately reflects true Witchcraft, for the root of the Mandrake Plant is used to make powerful restorative potion.

However, Rowling exercises "poetic license" here, depicting the root of the Mandrake Plant as a human baby! The professor of potions explains that the root of the Mandrake is gown until it loses its pimples, at which time, it is killed, cut up and stewed! Thus, the "human baby" of the Mandrake Plant is allowed to grow until late adolescence -- until about 17 years of age -- at which time it is killed, cut up, and stewed! Human sacrificed is thus depicted here, much as it is required in Satanism.

People are sufficiently being conditioned in values and attitudes to accept Antichrist. The Harry Potter phenomena seems to be as much of an indicator as to the lateness of the prophetic hour as any actual fulfillment of prophecy now occurring on the world scene.

    "EVEN SO, COME, LORD JESUS!"

Well regardless if it is truely teaching people about witchcraft, it has the appearance of that, does it not? I mean the kid calls himself a wizzard! That goes against what God says in His holy Word. The Bible says we must avoid even the appearance of evil. Harry Potter definatly appears like it's in favour of the occult, does it not?
How do we, as Christians assoiate ourselves with something that obviously appears so evil? How can we? What kind of testimony is that?

Exodus 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards , to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards , to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Leviticus 20:27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard , shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch ,

Deuteronomy 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard , or a necromancer.

1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft , and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

2 Chronicles 33:6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft , and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards : he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Galations 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are these;.....
Galatians 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

According to the Bible Harry Potter is something that the Lord God takes offense to. If professing, born again, Christians can sit back and find nothing wrong with Harry potter..I think that says something for the spiritual condition they are in .

the truth is that Harry Potter portrays witchcraft and sorcery as being GOOD and acceptable.

The truth is the movie is NOT God honoring (nor are the books)

The truth is it goes against the word of God

The truth is the author is a professing hater of God.

The truth is that it makes people think witchcraft is okay.

The truth is GOD said it's not...in ANY shape or form.

The truth is that it's sad that you can sit there and excuse away what the Bible says and stand up for something that goes against God and what he said..

The movie is a real movie portraying a wizard, and showing him using magic. God said not to mess with such things.

I suppose next you'll be in support of pornography movies because after all they're just movies and "The truth is a movie is not real"

People don't want their kids to watch it because they believe the Bible and know what God said about such things. at least that is the case in my church.

I wish people like you would realize that God said things for a reason and that he meant what he said.
