How many of you, that consider yourself saved by faith in Jesus Christ, believe in moral absolutes?......That there are things that are always right and always wrong.

I'd be very interested in your thoughts.

    Thanks! [IMG]

Um, I've never heard of that term before, but there are some things I have convictions on that I beleive I'd die for before I'd compromise them. Can you give me some examples of what you mean?

moral absolute... that there IS a RIGHT and there IS a WRONG

and that YOU'RE not the one who makes RIGHT and WRONG...

black and white... no grey....that sort of thing

I'm so black and white I'd look over exposed if I were a photo graph... so YES I do go by absolutes...

I am BLACK and WHITE. There is no in between. So many Christians out there believe there is a gray area. Where in the Bible do you see where God says, "It might be okay to do this under these circumstances." NO!!! He never says that. Gray areas tend to get people into trouble sometimes too. :(

I believe there are moral absolutes, though not in everything, and I would probably see more gray than most people here.

Moral absolutes? ABSOLUTELY. example: the Ten Commandments. Those are absolutes..there is no arguing if they are right or wrong. You either do what's right and follow...or do what's wrong..and reject them.
Granted there are a lot of issues that are not layed out clearly..and those are issues that are between us and God.
But the answer to the question is YES!! There are most definately moral absolutes!
    PEACE

Oh, almost everywhere. For example - killing is wrong isn't it? You shall not kill. What about in self defense? Is that always wrong? Is the death penaly always wrong? How about soldiers, is it wrong of them to kill enemy soldiers? What if it's an accident? How about in the case of a doctor trying to treat a patient, and he knows that this last-ditch attempt at treatment could either cure the patient or fail miserably and kill him - if it fails, has the doctor done wrong?

It's important, in my mind, to recognize that you just might not always be right, and you might not always know what to do. I can say that I think such and such is always wrong, but without experience, it's often uninformed. If I were actually in a situation where I had to make a decision about that, who knows what I would do? I think any moral or ethical system (I mean by which you'd make decisions on what is and is not moral or ethical) would be hard pressed to be totally complete and able to address any issue that might arise in one's life.

There is black, there is white, and there is grey. I believe it is Romans 14 that is a great passage for this.

last I checked it was thou shalt not murder.... not kill... otherwise hunters would also be breaking the 10 commandments

and they "I didn't know" excuse doesn't cut it... because if that's the case we could all just plead our case to God at the judgement "I didn't know You were SERIOUS when You said to worship only You!"

I'm black and white. What God says is what GOd says. You can take it to the bank. I've never heard that term for it, but then again, I'm no theologen. All I know is what my Bible says, and what the men of God preach backing it with scripture. If it's biblical, then follow it.

    The reason I asked.....

This information comes from the Christian researcher George Barna's organization.

"In total, 83% of teens maintain that moral truth depends on the circumstances, and only 6% believe that moral truth is absolute. (2001)
When it comes to believing in absolute truth, only 9% of born again teens believe in moral absolutes and just 4% of the non-born again teens believe that there are moral absolutes. (2001) (For more information about the held perspectives on moral truth, see the February 12, 2002 Press Release article titled "Americans Are Most Likely to Base Truth on Feelings." "

The article mentioned can be found here: http://www.barna.org/cgi-bin/PagePressRelease.asp?PressReleaseID=106&Reference=C

    Sad isn't it? :(

dad has a more recent polling (or so he just said)

and the numbers for teens believing in absolutes in CHRISTIANS have gone down... but in non-Christians they've gone up... that's what sadden's dad...

Although the world and liberals may say that there are no absolutes I'm thankful today that I have a book that teaches different. Sadly such a philosophy as that has crept into our school system today and it is leading many young people astray- Its time for us to get back to the straight and narrow and live by the Word of God and nothing else, never relax your standards and God will certainly bless you in a wonderful way. Believe it or not, this thinking has even crept into the Church.

Not trying to start an arguement, but as I recall the Bible says "Thou shalt not MURDER" not kill. And the Bible goes on to give the illustration of men working and having an axe head fly off and kill a man. God has also ordained the death penalty, "he that liveth by the sword shall die by the sword".
God's word is always correct and does not contradict itself. The fact of the matter is that there are biblical absolutes concerning matters.

Tape Maker, it isn't always that clear. Like lying...is it wrong? Always? Remember for Rahab it was counted as righteous. Is abortion always wrong? What about in the case of incest, rape, or if the mother will die without it?
Then there are things like Christian liberty and some debate what a Christian can and cannot do. Rock music...alcohol...cards...movies...clothes...body piercings...these are all just the tip of the iceberg for grey areas.

As far as I'm concerned abortion uder any circumstance is MURDER, MURDER, MURDER...

And as for Music, Movies, bodypeircings- it has nothing to do with Moral Absolutes but convictions and the stadards that the child of God has laid down for their life... The Bible commands us to "come out from among them and be ye seperate..."
    Thnx,
