I hate to say this kiddies - but prom is not the den of inquitous evil that will suck you in and destroy your soul

plenty of proms here and trust me boring, ol socializing, and dancing - I don't dance - but i see nothing wrong with dancing that does not simulate sex.

Heck I even played hosted card games in the corner for us non-dancers which ended up being a lot of the guys ;) boy were the ladies mad at me that night he he he he *wipes away tear* memories

Kayla - David showed his private male parts and probably everything else while dancing - linen is pretty light when you dancing like mad and yet God did nothing to him; but made barren his wife for well... nagging about it
    2Samuel 6

to properly describe an ephod it is a garment that consists of a front and back and has no sides much like those people who walk with those signs on their front and back - except in the case of the ephod it was tied at the waist

oh yeah as to the smoking and marijuana charges - I have yet EVER in my life seen or heard save in movies and books seen someone smoke anything and dance at the same time

all the bad stuff happens at the after parties, and I'll agree some really bad stuff happens - but its not at prom - and you should go - even you Abby and lindz - dont make me come down there and drag each of you off to your respective proms - I will - I have no life!

It logically would defy their whole excuse system for smoking ;) I should know smokers were my friends in high school - the Christians beat me up - I will have the scars on my hand for life - to remind me that never say something or someone is evil without giving them a chance - sure that brings me too close to the edge sometimes - and i fall off - but i look at my hand and I say to myself "better that then become what they were"

and lindz you better be home-schooled or else there is a small problem with hypocrisy going on at your home

How does the prom glorify God? You can't serve two masters- either you're glorifying God or serving the devil. Stick to those standards, girls, and always take the high road...trust me, years from now, should our Lord tarry, it won't even matter to you that you didn't go.

    Amen Grranny!!!
I am a homeschool junior this year and there was I believe some kind of dance within the support group but I had and will have no part or interest in it.

You (anybody, not just you Granny) show me in the KJV Bible where GOD says it is ok to dance in a dark room with ungodly music and punks. When a couple is dancing that way most all they think about is the other persons body.
    Just MHO

That's right, Kidz...after my children got older, some friends of my youngest son said I had been too strict & I should've let him "sow his wild oats"...I asked them to show me from the Bible where it says we're to 'sow our wild oats'. (I'm still waiting...)

How does the prom not glorify God - Granny, Lindz. Abby, anyone?

I say the prom glorifies God in that if done properly it is

    1) an avenue for fellowship with fellow Christians
(since one would assume you would seek out fellow Christians in your high school, and be friends with them)
    2) can present opportunities for witness
(by going to the prom and not dancing or acting in a fashion unbecoming, should foolish behaviour arise)
    3) not abandoning another cultural institution to lies and fearmongering by ignorant people who say that something is what it is NOT

Ive been to proms - they aint evil - most of the time its pretty darn boring - but not evil

and Granny - I really doubt they meant the actual physical act sowing of wild oats, but then again I would've been more concerned had you said your son said you had been to strict - but then again I think all kids think that to some extent.

The Bible says that God takes pleasure in our joys - and that He desires that we take pleasure from life - not evil pleasure - but still pleasure nonetheless

Kidz...if you look in the last Psalms...I believe it's 150 (i don't have a bible handy at the moment)it speaks of dancing, now it doesn't specify to be in a dark or lighted room, music would be of some consideration of course...dancing it'self would not be biblically wrong unless sexually dancing.

Granny, proms don't NOT glorify God either, just one of those personal conviction situations. Actually I see much opportunity for christian students to be a christian wittness and help to their peers at the prom or any school dance, first they can invite other non christian students to go hang at the local diner instead of heading off to a party where they'll be tempted to do the not so great things, they have the opportunity to get to know other students they may not otherwise have the chance to talk to during the school day, encourage their friends and share their faith....hey these sort of chances arise when you least expect it.

As for serving two masters, uhhh I don't see how anyone is serving satan by attending their prom.

But just think of how much more of a testimony they'll be if they DON'T go...keeping one's self separated from the world is what we're called to do. We have to be in the world but we do NOT have to participate in the things of the world.

Proms are worldly: the music is wordly, the dancing is wordly, there is nothing Godly about it. The sinners & publicans followed Jesus to Matthew's house to eat-He didn't follow them.

It's like you're saying it's okay to smoke dope as long as you don't inhale, it's okay to go to a bar-just don't get drunk. These young folks will have a better opportunity to witness by NOT attending...either you're glorifying God or you're not, there is no in-between.

Many large churches now have alternatives to proms. Our home school group joins with other local groups for a fancy sit down dinner for the seniors and their dates. The kids still get to dress up and feel special without the ugliness associated with proms.

I recently read that a girl is expected to 'express her appreciation' to her prom date by sleeping with him and many parents rent rooms at hotels where the kids can drink and cavort without parental interference. The same mother telling me this was taking her son and his friends to St. Pete for Spring Break and said the boys will be 'flashed by girls' several hundred times a night in exchange for mardi gras bead type necklaces... which the parents have given them money to purchase. This flashing is exposing body parts!

Stay home or have a small party for your like minded friends.

My only real complain with the prom is the music... and perhaps dancing to that type of music..(Britney, Christina, etc)

I did go to my prom, and I cant really say I thought it was evil. I went with a dear Christian friend, and we went with a group of people who were all christians. We acted silly and danced. Nothing got sexual between any of us.

After the dance, we all went to one of the girls houses and played games. The guys didnt spend the night, but they did stay really late into the evening if I can remember correctly.

The other people, at the dance.. well... They did do a garter dance, which I found a little riske for highschoolers. They did go to parties afterwards, where I am sure sexual activity and drinking was going on. That stuff surely isnt Godly at all.

Do I recommend going? naw.. probably not. The music itself is offensive enough. Do I think social dancing is prohibited by the bible? NO WAY.. so many people danced in the bible for other reasons other than idol worship or sexual meaning. There is a big difference, for instance, in "bumping and grinding" and "the polka".. You cant convince me that a bunch of old folks at the local vfw hall dancing their socks off are doing the same thing that goes on in a strip club, even a night club.. Its just not the same, and the bible wouldnt categorize them as the same.

I truly believe the folks saying that any kind of dancing is evil, is adding to the word of God. Its just silly. Have you ever played music around an older infant or toddler? They automatically start bopping up and down, even if they have never seen mommy or daddy dance. Obviously, dancing is a celebration of joy, and if done properly, carries no evil at all whatsoever.

    just my 2 cents

There's no way dancing can be done to the honour and glory of God if it's done to the devil's music.

When I taught school, one of my assignments was to sponsor and plan the Junior Prom. Now here I was a person who had never been to a dance. In fact, I would have been expelled from college for dancing. My high school had a formal senior banquet. No dancing.

So I went to the Senior Prom and learned, it was not a bad thing. The kids were having fun...the dancing...well it looked more like exercise to me. So I helped organize and sponsor the Junior Prom, making sure there were plenty of chaperones
    in attendance.

The students had a great time, planning the theme of their prom, making decorations, and they all look so beautiful and elegant in their formal wear. There was no smoking, drinking of alcohol, etc.

My children and step-children went to their high school proms and my granddaughter went to the Senior Prom all three years she was in high school.

The problem with proms may be the after prom parties that are not chaperoned.

I believe that one can go to a prom and still glorify their Lord in their actions. We are Christians 24 hours per day, at school, at work, at play, wherever we are. It is up to us to act like Christians where we are. Just remember you are on God's Mission at all times.

I would say go and have a great time with your friends. Remember the values that your parents have taught you.

    Granny,

are you insinuating that polka is the devil's music?

perhaps some of the beer titles could be bad.. but..

    "who stole the keishka?"

I cant think of a more innocent type of music.

I already agree that dancing to the other stuff isnt glorifying to God.

I don't like dancing but am a big fan of the devil's music, you know, CCR, Jethro Tull, really twisted evil stuff. Guess I'll be surfing on a lake of fire. Please.

Actually unless the moves are really sexual, dancing is absolutely non evil even to secular music. Does that mean exercise is evil? Because much of the exercise done today is done through dancing.

Sorry, provide proof that dancing is evil, even if it's to music with secular lyrics or even music with no lyrics.

Yes you can have a testimony either way, go or don't go..it's really up to the girls, guys, parents and what God places on their hearts to do.

    to chargrov-
why did you say in a very "whatever" kind of way, "I don't like dancing but am a fan of the devil's music, you know, CCR, Jethro Tul, really twisted evil stuff. Guess I'll be surfing on a lake of fire. Please." Are you saying that this stuff isn't that bad, not bad at all, or that you just don't care what God has to say? i'm confused and troubled by what you've said!

    Lindz,

I'm just guessing but I think Chargrove was just being a little sarcastic.

I just wanted to drop in and tell everyone that I didn't mean to cause a controversy. I had no idea that such a simple question was going to cause such a debate. I also wanted to add that I'm not going to prom after all, but it wasn't because of anything I read here. It was simply a personal choice and I can always hang out with my friends on another ocassion.

I don't know what study you did, but there is no place where social dancing is celebrated by God. I do know that Moses broke the 10 commanment tablets because he saw idol worship and dancing. Also King herod killed John the BAptist because of a dancing woman's request. </font>[/QUOTE]Are you joking? You do realize you named the ONLY two events in the Bible where dancing is seen in a bad light?

My goodness, I don't even know where to start to dispel your beliefs. The Bible mentions dancing 30 times. If it were bad, don't you think it would say it somewhere? Mariam and the women danced before Israel and praised God. Thunder and lightning? nope. David and the House of Israel danced before God (David practically naked). Did the earth open and swallow them? Nope. Do you read Psalm 149 and 150? What about Ecclesiates 3:4? If nothing else convinces you, consider the parable of the prodigal son. Who does the father in that story represent? God himself, right? What does the father do when his son comes home? He throws him a party! With dancing. If God himself throws a party with dancing, can it really be evil?

As in many "controversial" subjects, the Bible can be used to support or deny claims that dancing is "evil." It's not a cut and dry issue. However, I DO believe that individuals fall under certain convictions, and if a person feels uncomfortable participating in or being around such an activity, that person is within his/her own rights to abstain.

There are also degrees of appropriateness that can be discerned. I believe that professed Christians do need to be careful about the message they send when they step out on the dance floor. The dance floor as a social form of exercise is far different from a "dirty dancing" platform, of course.
