I am looking for a discipleship study that helps local church members to understand that there really are different personality types that can be found within the local church. Since this is the case, we as Christians need to learn how to live effectively with those Christians whose personality types differ from our own.

I recall several years ago having read a book that described four distinct personality types: I remember three of them--phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. The fourth one I cannot recall at the time.

But I don't believe that this particular book told us how we as Christians can better interact with these four different personality types. To the best of my knowledge, the book only described the four different types.

If you know of such a book or study that I am looking for--one that helps us to recognize and live peacefully and respectfully with different personality types--please share. ... Also...if you think there is a better area within this forum to post this request, please advise. THANKS.

Melancholy. And the so-called "types" are a myth. :)

I am not looking to post anything controversial here, but I really do not understand the value in all of these discipleship studies. I think that we need to study the Bible (and granted, there are many good Bible studies out there). When I pick up my Bible I see four gospels. These are each written to different people, but they are not catered to different personality types. It is as if God really doesn’t care that I am a
phlegmatic introvert and TCassidy is a choleric extrovert as He gave us the same Bible. But maybe I am a bit old school here. When it comes down to it, those in my church have to love me because God told them to even if they don’t like me. :Biggrin

But, my personal preferences aside, maybe Gary Chapman’s book “The 5 Love Languages” could be something along the lines of what you are seeking.

Of course there are differently personality types -
Within a Bible Study - you will always have someone to dominate the discussion, someone who will never contribute anything - someone who will dispute everything, the class clown - ect
The teacher need to learn how to deal with each of those individuals. Also class members must deal and adjust with each of these personalities.

But that is not what the OP is talking about. He is talking about the book "Spirit Controlled Temperament" by Tim Lahaye and his four temperament types, Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy and Phlegmatic.

When I read the Word, God explains my personality to me: prideful, selfish, self centered, critical, impatient. Then He shows Jesus...loving, kind, patient, compassionate, gentle. And then God shares with me that Christ lives in me and the flesh must be crucified daily. God also reminds me that the Same Spirit that rose Christ from the dead Lives in me and is able to do abundantly above anything I ask or think. And if He is powerful enough to Raise the dead, He is powerful enough to mold me into the image of Christ. Now as far as the superficial realities of my personality...energetic, social, humorous, analitical, etc. I don't concern myself with that because that's how God made me and I'm thankful He did.

Thanks.....This is the book. The title registered with me instantly. I will check it out once again. Hopefully it's a start in what I am looking for.

Have you looked critically at the word 'analytical' to any degree?

Looking at the Psychiatry "Bible" (DSM-5) under personality disorders might be more helpful!

I have a book in my library written from a Christian perspective that goes through the various personalities. I am ISTJ. Can't remember the name.
