April - Reading 6

    Good evening -

    Joshua tonight was much like our reading in Numbers. The long lists of kingdoms and lands was a bit numbing but there are a few things to glean from these passages even if one is not a Biblical scholar or historian.
    For one, we know that Joshua's age has now become quite advanced, but just as Moses, he has retained his strength and is still willing to do the Lord's work.
    We also learn that since crossing the Jordan, the Israelites have returned to the Mosaic Law and the customs and practices referred to in Exodus and Leviticus are once again being practiced. Much of our upcoming readings will be about geography and I will attempt to find us some maps. These visual keys help me a lot with understanding the intent of the passages.

    In Mark tonight, we learn that Matthew's given name was probably "Levi." The name "Matthew" means "gift of the Lord" and was probably his apostolic name.

    The reading in 1Corinthians 5 is on the expulsion of the immoral from the church. As demonstrated in verse 5 the intent was to push the person into repentance. One thing I would note on this particular passage is that it is a good chance that 2Corinthians 2:5-11 speaks of bringing someone back into the fold. I would never suggest reading one of these passages without the other. The goal is to get the sinner to repent and recognize his error, not to completely exile him forever.

    Hi Clint,
    I am reading NIV this year, and finding it less difficult to understand, still a bit `numbed` by the lists......but all in all doing better this year thanks for your hard work and encouragement.
