The Trump administration has proposed reforming the way the SNAP (food stamp) program is administered. Rather than issuing an electronic benefits card for people to use to buy groceries at the grocery stores, people would received a box of food containing shelf-stable milk, canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, and cereals. The Agriculture Department figures this would save about $2 billion a year because it would be able to buy these items in bulk.

The proposal does not say how the users would received the boxes, rather it puts that burden on the states to figure out.

Only people that get more than $90 worth of benefits would get the food boxes. The food boxes would not replace the electronic benefit cards, but would comprise up to 50% of the monthly benefit. So, half your benefit would come from the boxed foodstuffs and half would be money loaded on a benefit card.

I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand I'm attracted to the money saving potential of this. Also the ability to see that people get at least half their food in actual food and not in soda pop, junk food, and other unhealthy items.

BUT...this smacks of Big Brother. This is taking away freedom, the freedom to buy your own food. This is forcing government further into our lives. This will create an unfunded mandate on the states to figure out a distribution scheme. Frankly, it reminds me of communism. Here is your allotted about of food that we decide you should have. You're going to love it!

Bottom line--this is NOT Making America Great Again.

    Your thoughts?

It will probably be done through the existing "food bank" system. Until about ten years ago, food banks dispersed USDA surplus items.

Interesting. I kinda like the idea.

Especially since we know a large percentage of SNAP money is spent on junk food and carbonated soft drinks.

People would still have the choice to buy whatever they want...with their own money.

Well, I'm kind of a radical on the subject, but I think the entire welfare bureaucracy should be dismantled.

If you are hungry we will feed you in something akin to a soup kitchen.

If you are homeless we will house you in something akin to a military barracks.

If you are sick we will provide medical attention via a free clinic and paupers ward in a hospital.

If you are naked we will clothe you with hand-me-down clothes donated for that purpose.

But nobody gets one thin dime.

My nephew is a hospital administrator at a very large Chicago hospital. He says people on welfare drive in in new Cadillacs, wearing expensive jewelry, talking on the latest i-phone/i-pod, and get free everything because they are on welfare.

And an entirely new one put in its place.

So big government doling out benefits at government aid stations. Round everyone up, put them in a gulag, give them some rags for clothes, and feed them soup. How compassionate!

In the past I have suggested that medical units of the National Guard and Reserves could be used
to provide services for those in need.-

    Thoughts?

IMO, it's all about the votes. Does the idea play best for the right or for the left? Which side wins here?

Apparently there is nostalgia in some corners of America for "gubment cheese":

Check out the response to a Boston restaurant tweeting that it features "government cheese":

Commodity cheese was the best. Not so fond of the canned luncheon meat, nonfat milk powder and split peas.

I've supported a number of people who are homeless. They would have been overjoyed to have a military barracks to sleep in if it were safe especially on very cold nights.

Nope. The government need not be involved.

Why do you want big government to do what Christ has commanded you to do?

Wow! What is behind your contempt for your fellow man? What have they ever done to you to deserve such hatred?

Yes. You apparently have none. How utterly sad.

We feed 150 families per week. We proved what we call a "warming station" open on cold nights. We provide a warm, safe place to sleep, a hot supper, showers, and clean, warm clothes. Each person is given a quilt made by our ladies which they can take with them.

Jesus made it clear in John 13:35, "By this shall all people know you are my disciples, that you love one another."

Seeing how Cokes (Soft drinks) are the number one purchased food stamp item....time to stop all of this. Zero food stamps/cards only food. A day doesn't go buy without someone on Facebook offering to sell welfare cards money.

I'm sorry man, you're really out of control. That's a lot coming from me. I have no idea what's going on with you but I'm kind of worried about you.

Yep. I was behind a woman the other day that paid for all kinds of valentine candy with her Snap card.
