You are doing it Biblical. The govt. taking care of the poor majorly undermines the Church. Most Christians don't get it. I am glad you do. Its the job of the government to fight wars. Its the job of the Church to care for the poor.

To quote someone: "Show me where I said that."

I am not in favor of that sort of action. I am simply showing the ridiculousness of your "plan".

    You show an alarming ignorance.

Well, InTheLight seems to hate what we are doing (and me too, it would seem), so we must be doing it right. :)

He's not worth the effort. I just ignore everything he says.

Besides, "pistols at daybreak?" He wouldn't stand a chance. I was pistol champ at a 6000 person department and still go to the range regularly and fire over 1000 rounds down range every week. And I still teach safety and marksmanship classes. I can still hit the 10 ring 10 out of 10 at 25 yards with my SIG. :)

My mom was a widow with a CP daughter and two small sons in addition. Believe me, we did not live an expensive life. We ate spaghetti mostly with fish sticks and tuna salads and a pork chop every once and a while.... oh and welfare cheese which was really a big log of Kraft Velveta cheese. We survived because of grandparents who took us in and moms varied jobs. There was no free lunch.... and the ones they offered in school we would not take. But I fear today for the elderly, for hungry children and I fear for those struggling... really struggling. Are you really going to take away nutrition from these folks? Really?

To quote someone: "Show me where I said I hated what you were doing."

Show me where I said I hated you.

I'm just getting tired of your condescending posts. You constantly say that people are ignorant. That people are wrong. That you have corrected them yet they still persist in their error. You ask questions that are complete non-sequiturs, i.e. your response to me, "What is behind your contempt for your fellow man? What have they ever done to you to deserve such hatred?"

In the context of the OP, which was about a government reform of the food stamp program, you said you wanted to dump the entire welfare system and go with a radical approach. That approach was to house homeless people in something like military barracks, feed the starving at something akin to soup kitchens, put the sick in a pauper's ward at a hospital, etc. etc.

So EXCUSE ME for assuming you were talking about a government program to replace welfare and not about a charity based system. You cannot expect people to think that a charity can compel hospitals to accept poor people in a "pauper's ward", or that charity could build military barracks and house the homeless. The scale and scope of that sort of project is simply too big.

Meanwhile, you're gloating like you scored points on me and high-fiveing those that agree with you like it was some sort of a victory. Muddled writing and misplaced insinuation of someone else's positions is not a desired personal quality.

Edited to add: Now I see you are bragging about your ability to shoot me if there were to be a pistol duel. Wow.

You know what they say about "assume."

And if you consider my going to the range and honing my shooting skills to be a threat you need professional psychological help.

Doubling down on the condescension, I see.

"Show me where I said you were a threat."

I agree. Because the churches have failed in their responsibilities to the widows, orphans, and elderly. If churches would stop saying, "Not my problem, let the government do it" maybe we would have fewer people suffering.

No. As I said, we feed them. We fed 153 families last week through our church food bank, and over 1000 people through our Border Missions outreach.

I agree with you but may I just interject; 1. No church can ever begin to scratch the surface & 2. Churches will never economically be able to do the job alone 3. It requires the governments assistance, not freaking box lunches. Good lord, what has America become. My wife’s uncles worked for the WPA during the depression. My great grandfather had a farm and his kids and grandkids worked on the farm....worked really hard (sunup to sundown) every stinking day to stay alive.

"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

If you can't properly manage the second, it's usually because you've screwed up the first. And if you've screwed up the first, the second will never happen.

From those to whom much grace and mercy have been given, much grace and mercy is expected.

Let's sever ourselves from political ideologies for a moment and place ourselves in the place of those who receive these benefits. Poverty is the result of holistic and systemic failures that are too numerous to mention here. Let us not forget the complete and total spiritual helplessness the Lord rescued us ALL from. The depths of our spiritual poverty far exceed the most depraved welfare abuse you could name. And yet our Lord saved us.

Whatever version of material poverty any of us has experienced it is nothing compared to what we have been saved from.

Let that truth inform our opinions on how to address the issue.

    God bless!

Statistically, people on SNAP buy fewer soft drinks than the average person in America.

No single church, of course not. But if we all do our part it will get done. Ecc 4:12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Sure we can. Stop building huge monuments to some preacher's ego and spend the money were it is needed. Sell the jet plane. Get rid of the Rolls Royce. Sell the multimillion dollar "parsonage."

We don't get any government assistance and still manage to help a lot of people. And we get a lot of help from the biggest grocery chain in Texas.

And who mentioned box lunches? Our food pantry is like a grocery store. People leave with boxes and boxes of food. And Border Missions serves hot breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. And the people are free to take home whatever is left over.

Where in the world did you got "box lunches?"

I would far prefer that the Church provide the needy with their needs rather than the government. Why hasn't this happened? While you debate on what the perfect solution is people are going to bed hungry and dying of malnutrition in America especially children.

Thank you. He has. With a 1 million dollar budget, missions is our biggest single line item. (Of course all of our property is paid for. The buildings were paid for before they were built.) :)

It hasn't happened because the govt. steals so much of the Church members income that The Church can't do it.
