The link is taking me to a Baptist press article with various comments on Billy Graham's death. Is that the intention?

Since when does the SBC Executive Committee have any authority to tell another Baptist body who they should associate with?

I realize that they are using Cooperative Program funds as the lever to try to move things their way, but - regardless of what the DCBC decides to do - they should reject the Executive Committee's demands.

The Executive committee is not telling the DCBC what to believe or who they associate with.
Currently, the DCBC is affiliated with the ABC, SBC, NPBC and the CBF.
IMHO - the SBC wants to know where the DCBC stands.

They are certainly trying to use financial leverage to force the DCBC to disfellowship this church according to the EC's timetable.

If they wanted to know that, they could ask. They are trying to exercise financial leverage.

If I was calling all the shots at DCBC, I would disfellowship this church and also give the EC a lesson on Baptist polity. But I would give the lesson on Baptist polity first so that it would not appear that I was caving into the EC's demands. That only leads to worse abuses.

To those who contend the local autonomy of the SBC Church, this is part of the exposed underbelly control held by the leadership of the SBC.

Certainly, there should be standards, but this idea that there is no influence, and even a certain level of control is historically inaccurate.

    What is more sad?

That it took the EC to in a sense compell the local assembly to get there house in order.

But the church and/or association is free to make its own decision.

Keep in mind that the issue at hand is a doctrional issue of which is in opposition to the SBC.

It has gotten worse over the last 30 years or so, but it is usually not as bad as its detractors claim it is.

True. But many of the self-proclaimed "Independent" Baptist churches are also in relationships that influence and use leverage.

The DCBC is doing what it thinks is appropriate. The EC's meddling only makes it more complicated.

Several years ago, in our association we had a church whose pastor divorced his wife and married the church secretary. The EC of our Assoc recommended to the church that they should remove the pastor from the pulpit.
The church refused to do so. Our EC then recommended and we withdrew association from that church.

So let me ask you- Did our Assoc EC have the "authority to tell another Baptist body who they should associate with?"

If the individual churches are autonomous, why did such take place at the EC level rather then individual assemblies stating publicly they were no longer considering the violating church as in fellowship?

By each assembly taking their own stand, and each publishing the cause and reasons, then they have participated effective discipline that all in the community know the truth.

Such provides both discipline to the local assembly, and allows those at the family level to consider the consequences of behavior impacts more then just the β€œI” and β€œme.”
