I saw this tweet by Larry Elder today, and thought I would offer it for discussion.

You forgot Oprah; although it's just one of her many residences.

Three of the seven mentioned in the OP are white. How is that race baiting? Sounds like you are doing baiting of another kind.

Wow, less than half the people mentioned are white and 57% of the examples are black. How does that compare to the general population?

It's not a matter of the "general population". It's a matter of Chicago's political power structure.

How about an example of a shining city on a hill? Name a couple.

Chicago has fallen on hard times. It is part of the rust belt. Steel, cars, railroading have declined as industries or have been automated. Many Chicagoans are moving to cities like Indianapolis. Chicago used to be the city that worked but now it is the last place in the country where you would want to go to look for a job. The Loop used to be crime-free practically but now armed robberies and car jackings are happening in the Loop. Long ago Los Angeles passed Chicago in population so Chicago fell from Second City to third largest. Now the entire state of Illinois has financial problems and I have met people from Illinois now living in Indianapolis. Years ago it was unheard of that anyone would leave Illinois for Indiana. Hopefully, the Trump economic boom will help Chicago. As for crime, per capita, Indianapolis is just as violent as Chicago. Indianapolis has a lot of low paying jobs in miles of warehouses that pay ten dollars or so. Young people all over the rust belt are hard hit. None of the Great Lakes States are doing all that well.

The point of the OP is that the utopian-creating progressives have had tons of money and buckets of time with no resistance from the other side to make Chicago into their Utopia. Why is it then a pile of steaming manure?

Tons of money? Maybe you should look into the financial status of Chicago and Illinois.

I'm not defending the liberals that have wrecked Chicago. I'm objecting to the premise of the OP. If Chicago is not a "shining city on a hill", tell us one that is.

"Why isn't Chicago a shining city on a hill?"

You do like strawmen arguments. You are so in tune to them that you don't even realize the majority of the threads you start are strawmen.

Chicago is part of the rust belt. Sure it was mismanaged but the good times ended a long time ago and the bills kept piling up. Name one city in the rust belt that is doing well.

In terms of crime, Indianapolis is the same as Chicago. In terms of economics, Detroit is worse, of course. Another city like Detroit is Gary, Indiana, once a steel- making center. The whole problem in the rust belt is the collapse of the industrial economy and the lack of economic opportunity in its wake. Indianapolis has hundreds of empty stores, which one of my friends attributes to online buying. Downtown Indianapolis has thousands of square feet of empty office space. I am not sure that Cincinnati is so well-off either, although Ark Encounter (Noah's Ark) has helped Cincinnati hotels and restaurants.
