This might be a bit of an odd question, but my personal convictions in regards to music lean toward melodious music such as classical music or traditional Christian hymns. Assuming this stance, how does a Christian deal with rock music played in daily places of business such as the workplace, the gym, stores, etc.? My feeling is that this is a case of “grin and bear it” as we are commanded to be in the world but not of the world. If I were to quit my job or quit going to the gym, etc., I would not have the opportunity to reach out to and be a testimony to people in those places.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and wisdom, brothers and sisters in Christ.

It isn’t just music, but all that is of this world which assaults the believer. We are in the world as ambassadors. We are not citizens of this world, and as one living in a foreign place must abide by the rules of that place, we must remain recognized as envoys of our true citizenship.

We must more often put up with the failed presentations, often reminding ourselves to be meek and wise, reminding ourselves that such wisdom from above is “... is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” That such wisdom must reflect itself both within us and as a light to the world.

To directly answer your question, one must then put up with that which would be personally repugnant.

One must express the fruit of the Spirit of God in us towards that and those who are hatefilled and abusive, knowing that insults, abuse, even injury is to be expected as the normal events of the believer’s living.

We currently live in the framework of the god of this earth in knowledge that there is yet a day when the King of Kings will rule and the foolishness that boldly expresses itself now will then be seen as shamefully foolish.

Do not contend with foolishness and fools. It is a waist of time.

There's nothing you can do about it, so don't worry about it, but I agree. Tired of it in the stores. You'd think they'd try a variety of music.

….there's a mountain station I listen to often that does just that, called Mix 106 (106.1 FM).

I’ve always enjoyed classical music ..... the Beatles are my favorite

Truly my dad cured me of any chance of enjoying classical music and opera.
He played it long and loud in the house when I was a boy; still does (although now it’s cuz he can’t hear well).

Not much of a music person and I don’t enjoy the stuff that passes as Christian music any more than the standard stuff on the radio.

Personally I don’t mind the background noise of soft elevator pop songs at work.
But it gets irritating when the same song is repeated incessantly.

I draw the line at Christmas music. It usually starts soon after Halloween and continues until the day after Christmas.... nine hours a day, five days a week for more than a month.

I’d be willing to listen to anything but Christmas music.

Thank you for all of the replies.

I guess my struggle comes from knowing where to draw the line - should I change my job, quit going to the gym, etc., so as to not be subjected to an ungodly environment (i.e. rock music)? But the Lord commanded us to let our “light shine before men”. I guess finding that balance is my question / dilemma. I also think of the Biblical principle that says we are to “be in the world but not of the world”. (John 17).
