I called it an illegal action by an armed group of far-right thugs.
A militia group detained migrants at the border. The ACLU calls it kidnapping - news+ - att.net

A militia group near the US-Mexico border detained hundreds of people this week, New Mexico's attorney general told CNN. "My office has been informed that this week, an armed group has detained nearly 300 people near Sunland Park, New Mexico," Attorney General Hector Balderas said in a written statement. "These individuals should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement."

"They have absolutely not been authorized by our office or any other. We are actively working with the AG's Office, state police and local police to determine what has gone on and what can and will be done," said Tripp Stelnicki, a spokesman for the governor. "That migrant families might be menaced or threatened in any way, shape or form is completely unacceptable."

"Interference by civilians in law enforcement matters could have public safety and legal consequences for all parties involved," the spokesman said in a written statement, referring those who suspect illegal activity to call 911 or contact the agency directly. "Border Security operations are complex and require highly trained professionals with adequate resources to protect the country."

No; however, exercising second amendment rights is not illegal but fundamental. It will have to be proven in court that these citizens were acting outside those constitutional rights, and it may have to be decided by the Supreme Court.

My initial guess is that they were acting within their own rights and in good faith. As has already been pointed out, the Anti-American Civil Liberties Union is hardly a go to for correct information or opinion. They are almost always on the wrong side.

Attorney General Hector Balderas said in a written statement. "These individuals should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement. So you support breaking the law?

Please provide a link to the law they are breaking.

Detaining lawbreakers is not illegal, though they will be up the proverbial creek if they mess up and detain an American citizen.

A masterful job of ignoring what was written and imposing your own imaginings devoid of factual basis. But perhaps you didn't know that the US Supreme Court outranks a state AG. And AG's don't decide cases, they only decide whether to prosecute them. You really don't seem to be from around here. The communistic mindset doesn't belong here, that’s for sure.

When law enforcement is derelict in its duty, intentionally, I support Americans protecting America.

FTW, on the surface, I'd say the folks made citizen's arrests on a fairly large scale. No different than a private security guard. How is that against the law?

I don't need a link. We have police officers, the border guard and the FBI to enforce the law. Private citizens are not authorized to do so unless requested by legitimate authorities to do so (deputize). Many of those detained were legally seeking asylum.

Please tell me what case the Supreme Court has ruled on that authorizes vigilante militia groups to take the law into their own hands. The Trump Nazi's will never take over America in spite of what you want.

Lol, come on. There's no way you believe that these people are legally seeking asylum out in the boonies.

How did you figure that out? Citizens have the Constitutional authority to make citizens arrests. There need be no request from l.e. for them to act. I processed several people over the years who were detained and charged by "citizens arrest."

They were right outside El Paso, TX which is an official border crossing.
