    Good evening -

In our reading in 1Samuel today we saw two different important stories. The first was the first sparing of Saul's life by David. Despite the urging of his men, David did not kill Saul when he saw him relieving himself in a cave. Instead, David recognized the authority that the king still had and that this authority had come to him from God and thus decided that it would be the wiser and more just course not to kill Saul. Saul seems to have a moment of lucidity at the end of the chapter when David bows to him and shows him the hem of his robe that he had cut, showing Saul that he had been at David's mercy.

The other story is that of Nabal and Abigail. This story can be viewed as a metaphor to what was occuring between david and Saul at the time. Nabal lived near Carmel which is where Saul had erected the monument to himself. David had been protecting Nabal's flock, just as he had also been protecting Saul's "flock." Nabal had a bad disposition just as Saul did. Nabal is described with the phrase "no man can talk to him," just as Saul was. The story continues in its parallels to the main plot all through the narrative.

In Mark I have always liked the story of the widow and her offering. It shows that God looks at percentages rather than amounts.

    May God bless you

    - Clint
