Funny thing is the Sermon Title is usually the last thing I do.

 

I never did title my sermons. Wouldn't have done any good because after point 1 I usually went off notes and ended up somewhere totally different than intended. I credit that to adult ADHD.

 

I actually read mine from a manuscript so about 70% of my sermon is pre-written 30% is in the moment. But I never forget a main point

 

I didn't forget, I just got on something else and never made it back.

 

If you preach expositorially through books of the Bible, it would make your life sooooo much easier

As a life long SBCer, I can honestly say that I have never heard of this actually happening.

I would tell anyone to get out of our Churches bidniz

 

Oh, I can guarantee this happened in the SBC NJ/PA convention (probably some 40 years ago now), since I was one of the possible candidates and was told they wanted to continue what the previous (founding) pastor had been doing.

They didn't seem to understand or appreciate my objection, nor my intended verse-by-verse expository form of preaching, so we mutually agreed to end further discussion and go our separate ways.

 

At my church, the former pastor's wife (aka pianist!) chose the music weeks in advance. When we were without a pastor, the organist took that job over, and continued in the same fashion. Now that we have a new pastor, they have continued the same way. Sometimes, it's just amazing how the hymns fit the message, other times, it's just a blessing to sing that particular hymn, and yet other times the Pastor will call out a different hymn as he feels led. (Fortunately we have both a flexible pianist and organist!)

 

All scripture is inspired.

 

And profitable

 

I would put my health first unless I could show from scripture a good reason for sacrificing it. I would tell the music director, not a NT office, to do what she wants and not place any further burden on you. What if the Lord moves you to change the subject at the last minute?

 

You are not being unreasonable at all. Many pastors I know spend the first part of the week in prayer over what they are going to be led to preach and don't have sermons prepared weeks in advance and would not know on Monday what the sermon is going to be. And in some cases, they have a sermon ready to go by Saturday and the Lord lays something else on their heart to say.

Tell the music leader to just let the Lord lead in what the songs will be and that you will let the Lord tell you what to preach.

 

Then you have the "high church" denominations that use the Lectionary to decide what their sermons text will be.

 

My pastor often doesn't complete his Sunday sermon outline til the Saturday eve. before he delivers it next AM. He may choose a theme or titleas early as Sunday afternoon, but he likes to read not just the Scripture pertinent to that theme, but others surrounding it.

His FT job is HS principal, so he has plentya time right now, but he still does it the same, he told me. He says, once he settles on a theme, new ideas come to him all week. as well as often additional Scriptures.

You must do things in a manner best for YOU to be your most-effective, as the Holy Spirit gives you ideas. Trying to conform to someone else's schedule often doesn't work. Everyone is different, & the Holy Spirit works with INDIVIDUALS, not a mass.

 

Have you ever thought of preaching through a book in the bible, or at least a few chapters? That would make it easier to communicate with your MD.

 

I try to hear sermons by different pastors as well as my own cuz I believe the Holy Spirit uploads different "nuggets" of intel to each believer or preacher. Thus, I hope to get an ever-growing overview of worship.
