Alabama Republican reads statement after audio account surfaces of her at a Baptist get-together performing 'in blackface, crawling around the floor looking for cigar butts':

Gov. Kay Ivey apologizes for racist Baptist Student Union antics

"I sincerely do not recall...the skit, which evidently occurred at a Baptist Student Union party, or....dressing up in overalls or in blackface [but] I will not deny what is the obvious. As such, I fully acknowledge – with genuine remorse – my participation in a skit like that"

52 years ago. Ask me what I was doing 52 years ago, & you likely won’t like the answer. Leftist smear.

Yep. Actions are to be judged in the lens of society in which they occurred, not the society of today.

Well, feeling especially generous and magnanimous today, I hereby forgive her for that, and even for being a Democrat up until 2002.

I just don't understand what it is with these people that they felt the need to don blackface. This makes no sense to me at all.

Was as wrong then, as now!

In apologizing for her vile act, it seems she correctly predicted that some would:

“attempt to excuse this as acceptable behavior [for the time]"

    And indeed some have. Sad.

So sad, Jerome. If you might recall, blackface was something quite common in plays & entertainment. Not saying it was in good taste, but I’m not ready to hang somebody over it either. You might remember Al Jolson? I’m growing tired of judgemental people. They rarely pass the muster when the spotlight turns to them. I’m not calling you judgemental, but if the shoe fits...........

List of entertainers who performed in blackface - Wikipedia

With blacks donning it as well, blackface has hardly been a clear-cut issue. And with famous entertainers donning it, why wouldn’t the general public get in on the act? Perhaps modern surprise and indignation should be taken as a sign of ignorance, maybe even self-righteousness?

Back in the 50s and early 60s our local Lion's Club had an annual minstrel show with people in blackface. We kids were entertained and thought nothing of it at that time. We should not judge by today's standards what had been acceptable by yesterday's standards.
