Former Roman Catholics in our church embrace the symbolism and figurative language Christ used. They cringe at the legalism and false gospel of the Roman Catholic Church.

When someone says "We get our doctrine from scripture and not other people" what they mean is, "we get our doctrine from our personal interpretation of scripture". What MarysSon is trying to say is that the ECF's interpretations of Scripture (or as we like to call it "Tradition") hold a lot more weight than you and every other Bob Smith that was born 2,000 years after the Scriptures were written. I trust the interpretation of the people who knew Christ's disciples personally... the apostles of the apostles, if you will, over some dude's interpretation that showed up 1500 years after the fact. That doesn't make sense to you?

We read scripture. We observe what it says. We ask questions. We answer those questions (interpret). We check our interpretation against the interpretations of others (Godly saints who came before us). We revise based upon what we learned and we repeat the process.
    It's called inductive study.
As opposed to being a lemming that follows one set of elite politicians...err priests...who tell you what to think and scare you into following their convoluted catechism lest you should perish because you failed to obey them.
So, yeah, your method is ripe for you to be duped, with you being none the wiser.
While, my method was modeled for me by the Berean Church in the book of the Acts of the Apostles.
Hmmm...I choose Berean model over Lemming model.
