    Paul writes to the Corinthians:

16But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. 17For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is goingd to you of his own accord. 18With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel. 19And not only that, but he has been appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of grace that is being ministered by us, for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our good will.

    Who is this man?

    Do you care to speculate?

Who would Paul praise as a great preacher and missionary?

Based upon 1 Corinthians my first thought is Apollos. Apollos is also mentioned in Acts as a great apologist.

It seems that people in antiquity also mention Luke as a possibility since Luke traveled with Paul and was an amazing historian and writer.

My guess would be Apollos first, and Luke second, as well.

There is a reason the name is not listed. We could make a case for quite the number of Biblical men. Two posters have stated their thinking is Apollos or Luke.

Why not Barnabas or Silas? Or someone previously unnamed?

Paul noted the names of numerous men and women who were a great help to him. I've not counted all their names, but it's quite the roll call.

    I don't think I'd try to speculate.

Indeed an interesting reference. A man identified solely by his excellent reputation among all the churches. And isn't there an additional anonymous reference in verse 22? Why the anonymity? Would the Corinthians be expected to already know from the context who is meant in both cases?

"Having been appointed by the churches" made me think of Barnabas first, Acts 11:20ff.
