Yes, and John MacArthur switched from the NKJV in his preaching to the ESV.

Alistair Begg switched from the 84 NIV to the ESV, as well. :)

My first Pastor Dr. Roland Rasmussen of Faith Baptist Church of Canoga Park. I was won to Christ at Faith Baptist Church in 1962. Joined that church in 1970. Was member there from 1970-1978.

    Wikipedia reports:

    J. Vernon McGee continued many speaking engagements after he retired, including throughout a bout of cancer from which he fully recovered. However, a heart problem surgically corrected in 1965 resurfaced, and he died in his chair in 1988. Since his death, the five-year program of Thru the Bible has continued to air on over 800 radio stations in North America, is heard in more than 100 languages, and is broadcast worldwide via radio, shortwave, and the Internet.

Just a guess -- I have yet to do the math -- but I ask you:

How many folks have been reached thru the ministry of J. Vernon McGee?

I know this may ruffle masculine feathers, but Nancy Guthrie's "Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament" is a fantastic five book series. Many top-notch male scholars enthusiastically recommend her work. Having read her first book on Genesis, I highly recommend reading these books.

Also, Rosaria Butterfield has some excellent books.
Finally, 9Marks has published some great material.

Her husband is David Guthrie. They have a very good 13 week workshop called "Grief Share" which is the best grief group curriculum I have found. All her work is Godward and solidly reformed in theology.

It seems like most are looking at this as pastors who weren't your pastor. I would like to mention two pastors who were my pastor, the first when I was baptized and the second when I was ordained -- Louis Asher and James W. Griffith. They will not be so well-known as most who are mentioned. In addition to being my pastor, each was also a teacher and an author. So I had the benefit of learning from them not only in what they taught from the pulpit, but also what they wrote. Of their books, I'm guessing the most likely any of you might have run across is John Clarke (1609-1676): Pioneer in American Medicine, Democratic Ideals, and Champion of Religious Liberty by Louis Asher.

I would also mention J. Vernon McGee. When I was a younger Christian he was a staple on the radio who I was able to hear daily, as well as getting some of his commentaries and other books.

Another author I have thoroughly appreciated is David F Wells.
"Above All Earthly Powers" and "God In The Wasteland" are two books every evangelical Christian should read today.

I should have listed "God in the Wasteland". I think I've read that book 20 times. No Place for Truth was also influential (probably his most important but I like God in the Wasteland best).

Well, I guess that is because some of you are more careful readers than I. Giggle I read Jon's OP when he posted it, but when I got around to posting I only referred back to the title:
    But now I notice:
Sorry, Jon. Of the "popular pastors and authors" I have already mentioned J. Vernon McGee. So to him I would add D. A. Carson, J. M. Pendleton, A. W. Pink, John R. Rice, and C. H. Spurgeon.
