Throughout my life, I have heard many sermons upon the return of Christ.

Within many, I heard statements such as, “the Lord could come back at any time...”

Yet, the longing for the “long expected” Redeemer has not rushed the Savior’s return. Human efforts to encourage and promote by work of sword or utopia have failed to bring the Lord.

I heard, in the last 30 years or more, a rising cry of mockery fulfilling the prophecy, “Where is the promise of his coming....”.

So what is preventing the return?

    Hint: Revelation 6.

Anyone find another place of answer? There is.

When the last elect sheep is saved and safe In Christ. As in the days of Noah...eating drinking, giving in marriage until the flood came and took them all away.
It is only the long suffering of God,waiting until He seeks and saves every sheep. He is not willing that any perish, In fact He has decreed destined and purposed to.save everyone given to Him by the Father.

    Sure
    Romans9:16-33

Peter speaks of it 2 Pet.9-18

The longsuffering results in salvation of all the elect.
    Not one is lost.
It goes exactly along with your fine Rev.6 reference of those saints awaiting the consummation of all things.
    The other Noah reference....mt24. 37-39

    All prophecy shall be fulfilled.

The current circumstances are really the first time period that match the potential fulfillment of Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39.

At least some of Israel is back in some of their God given land. A Sovereign state has been established. The nations listed in the Gog-Magog alliance, that are specifically prophecied to come against Israel in her land, are either fully aligned or almost fully aligned.

Damascus is still standing, but is also still at war with Israel.

The USA currently has troops in Syria and Iraq that hinder the Gog-Magog assault. But there are very strong and multiple avenues of influence at work seeking to remove American troops from the region.

These things are important because the Ezekiel's Gog-Magog war is executed with visible supernatural power that the scriptures says the nations will know that God supernaturally intervened to protect Israel. Reintroducing a period where supernatural powers are visible to all. The Antichrist and False Prophet shall display supernatural power in the Great Tribulation, as will the Two Witnesses.

There shall not be, visible to all, supernatural power displayed prior to the Rapture of the Church. The world, disregards and mocks the prophecies and power of God, in this current time, the same as in the days of Noah.

Therefore, knowing that the Antichrist's time is short, the Gog-Magog war must be staged to commence very shortly after the Rapture of the Church. My suspicion is that the Antichrist shall emerge as a heroic wounded warrior out of Israel's ranks in the Gog-Magog war. Israel is currently perplexed with their leadership, just as divided as America, and are primed for the emergence of a heroic figure. Just as King David emerged as a heroic figure.

I do not believe that the Gog-Magog alliance is willing to fight America, Israel's only powerful national Ally. So, I personally believe we will see a continuance of events that will cause American troops to clear out of the way. The support for removing American troops from foreign soil is growing in both political parties for some time now. But that's ok, the defense of Israel rests in the hands of the Almighty God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The Human Fraternity cult, of which liberal sects of Judaism is aligned, is waiting in the wings to follow the Antichrist and False Prophet's guidance.

The Abrahamic House, currently scheduled to be built in Abu Dhabi, will likely be built on the Temple Mount. Which matches the prophecy that the outer court not be built on the Third Temple and the presence of the heathens on the Temple Mount.

God moves in His own time, but the way appears to be prepared. Even so come Lord Jesus.

" But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."
    ( 2 Peter 3:8-10 ).

" For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 for this [is] my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins."
    ( Romans 11:25-27 ).

At the appointed time He will return. But IMHO it is a bit troubling to conclude He is being prevented from returning.

The clear answer is given by Jesus himself in his Olivet prophecy -
Mat. 24:1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

The end is in stages - Jesus is here prophesying the destruction of the temple in a time of war & trouble. The temple was of no significance after Jesus finishes his work of redemption at Calvary but God allowed it to continue as a centre for Gospel preaching as recorded in Acts. The disciples' question does not imply an understanding of what they were asking.

He gives detailed warnings concerning when the believers should leave the city before the final siege -
15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
    .....
28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
Compare with Luke to find that the abomination is the Roman armies - with eagle standards.
    Luke 21:20
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 “Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.
22 “For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
All that was to occur in the lifetime of "this generation."
Mat. 24:32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it[fn] is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.

Having given many details so they would know the end of "this generation" together with the destruction of temple & Jerusalem - all the physical signs of the Old Covenant, Jesus goes on to speak of another end - of heaven & earth.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven,[fn] but My Father only.
Jesus instruction to believers concerning that event is -
42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour[fn] your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

The timing of the passing away of heaven & earth is in God's and specific warning signs are not given. I suggest we can infer from the warnings Jesus gives that there will be increasing trouble, wickedness & war as the end approaches.

Be ready, watch & pray - & witness to a lost world.

In Peter's day the scoffers were asking about Jesus' coming -
2 Peter 3:3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

It seems the scoffers were aware of Jesus' warning of his coming for their judgment & the destruction -
Mat. 21:40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?”
41 They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.”
    .....
45 Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. 46 But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet.

That coming took place in AD 70. Peter goes on to speak of Jesus' final coming for the end of the present earthly system & the NH&NE, as Jesus did in his Olivet prophecy.

We must not be like Peter's scoffers, rather we must use the time of God's longsuffering patience - preach REPENTANCE!
2 Pet. 3:7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us,[fn] not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

I used preventing because the folks ask (in the Revelation 6 passage) how long until.

So, I used it in the sense of delay not in hindrance or one capable of stopping.

Interesting that when the second coming does occur the heathens will actually try to prevent (stop) it from happening.

it is unfortunate that you hold to such.

But this isn't the thread to discuss whether or not Christ has come, but what is preventing the coming.

That does, I suppose, imply that one must accept that there will be a future millennial reign.

But again that isn't the topic of this thread.

1 Peter 4;7, ". . . But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. . . ."

Matthew 24:14, ". . . And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. . . ."

To what degree must it be done? This is yet short!

2 Peter 3:9, ". . . The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. . . ."

Please read my posts again. I gave a careful, Scriptural answer to your OP. In Mat. 24 Jesus IS referring to the AD 70 destruction - which occurred in the lifetime of THIS GENERATION.

AD 70 is a "coming in the clouds" in the sense used in OT judgments, not his final return/coming for resurrection & judgment & the NH&NE.

The present Gospel age is the "day of salvation" during which Christ is gathering his redeemed people of all nations.

Yep. That would pise two major problems.
    1. Disunity in the God head.
    2. it would make the Second member of the God head less than Omnipotent.

Matthew 24:14. 'And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.'
One feels that with radio and internet evangelism the time may not be too far off, but on the other hand the fellowship of churches to which mine is affiliated recently published a prayer list of fifty towns or cities in the UK where there was no Bible-preaching church or any type or denomination.
If that is the case in Britain, how much more in France or China, Saudi Arabia or North Korea?
