    OK, the classic doctrine of good works follow heartfelt faith really got to me when I realized some things.

    That teaching leaves me unnerved even a little perplexed. I am apparently not alone. I now understand why I am unnerved. In my old southern baptist church before coming to the IFB, the teaching was that God was a fatherly, really grandfatherly, figure that was irritated at sin and would give us a good talking to about the sins we did as Christians. Sins we never repented of. There was regular talk about "babes in Christ," like Sanctification is ever optional in scripture.

    That cannot be further from the New Testament unless you abandon the Gospel whole hog. Hebrews 12 was written for teachers like that. A God Who is our you know, real dad, who will paddle our bottom to teach us not to do the wrong thing. A disciplinarian Father that wants His other kids to be like the begotten one. The words used in Hebrews 12 is "scourge every son" i.e. using a cat o nine tales to whip us bloody if we are imperfect. All because He loves us enough to make us like Him.

    As I've learned repeatedly the hard way, in the last four years after coming to Christ, when everyone is teaching falsely, getting to know what the bible really says is perplexing.

    Is that how it is in your understanding of scripture? Have you run into this problem? Do you have any stories of your own?

    My conclusion IMHO is that many Baptists and evangelicals do not understand their "God" at all. To be honest, I am terrified for them. Matthew 25 leaves little room for doubt about what happens to the tares among the wheat. A people claiming to be wheat that could care a wit about actually being like their God is one I am terrified for.

    @Steven Yeadon,
    I am going to break it down as I understand this.

    First, salvation is a gift, Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8.

    Second, the forgiveness promised is complete and irrevocable, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Hebrews 10:16-17.

    Third, one of the purposes of salvation is to do good works, Ephesians 2:10, Philippians 2:12-13.

    Fourth, God gaves us a provision of cleansing, 1 John 1:8-10, 1 John 2:1-2.

    Fifth, we have a legal standing of being sinless (cannot sin) in Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 6:14, Romans 4:15, 1 John 3:4, 1 John 3:6. (This teaching is understood least by most Christians). It is not sinless perfection, see item 4.

    Job 5:17
    “Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves,
    So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

    Psalms 39:11
    “With reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity;
    You consume as a moth what is precious to him;
    Surely every man is a mere breath. Selah.

    Proverbs 3:11
    My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD
    Or loathe His reproof,

    Ephesians 6:4
    Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

    Hebrews 12:7
    It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

    Good works are the job of new creations, created for good works. So nothing we do results in our salvation, but if God credits our faith as righteousness, then our election and salvation was through or on the basis of faith. And once saved, as new creations we are to do good works in order to receive rewards, such that we enter heaven "abundantly." If our works miss the mark, we still enter, but as one escaping as from a fire, bringing little or no rewards with them.

    Thanks be to God He treats us as His children, chastening us, such that we miss less of the mark.
