ESV shows its Calvinist bias again at 1 Peter 1:3. The new birth is described as something God causes in us, not something that is given to us. Yes, I understand that God does all the work in the new birth, we do nothing, but the ESV is a major departure from most other translations here.

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [ESV]

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [KJV]

1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [NIV]

1 Peter 1:3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead [HCSB]

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead [RSV]

The ESV is just translating the Greek word. ἀναγεννάω (anagennao), which is active and being done to the direct object "us".

BDAG "beget again, cause to be born again"

Louw- Nida "to cause to be changed as a form of spiritual rebirth - to cause to be born again, to be given new birth"

EDNT "cause to be born again"

Every version says the same thing. God is the cause agent.

I am mystified by your complaint.

It's not that much of an outlier. The New American Standard has "caused us to be born again," as do the Lexham English Bible and the World English Bible.

I noticed that the OP left out the NASB. The Lockman Foundation cannot be accused of being a Calvinist shill.

Oh, sorry. Yes, these versions show Calvinistic bias as well. Thanks for alerting me.

I have a hard time imaging that Calvinist bias was the reason it was translated such in the LEB. They have a number of nonCals involved in the translation and study notes.

So, I give you a lump upside your head. I caused you to have a lump on your head.

I give you a hamburger. I caused you to have a hamburger.

What is your issue with the ESV translation?
