Good evening -

I made an interesting observation about our current passages in Jeremiah today. As we have been continuing our reading, I like to look up the cities and nations listed in our readings on maps to get a better perspective as we go. These writings beginning in chapter 46 are organized to list the nations going from west to east, cutting north when we go from Moab to Ammon continuing up to Damascus and then finally going back to its eastward direction in our reading tomorrow of Babylon.

In John today we read of the Feeding of the Five Thousand. This account is is the one Miracle aside from the Crucifixion which is mentioned in all four Gospels. I have found over the years that people will try to explain away this Miracle with logic. They will say, "...the people brought their own food but didn't want to break it out until they knew they didn't have to share," or some such explanation. This bothers me greatly. We as Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of the Creator of the universe but some feel it necessary to explain away the creating of a little bit of fish and bread. I won't sermonize on it tonight but it preoccupied my mind as I read.

Our reading in 1Peter today was the instructions to slaves on their conduct and witness as Christians. At face value we can say that this is an out of date message, however, in the harmony of the Scriptures, the instructions are still pertinent:

Song of Songs 3:1-4 The Maiden Seeks the Shepherd

I point out this Passage to show the contrast in what will happen later in the story. The maiden awakes at night and desires to see the shepherd. Note that the watchmen either assist or ignore the maiden but do nothing to hinder her. Things are about to take a turn in the story and the difficult relationship is about to become even harder.

Song of Songs 3:6-11 The Procession of the King

We see here King Solomon being carried on a litter while the feet of his entourage kick up the dust “like a column of smoke.” He is described in regal attire and all the pomp one would expect of royalty.

In verse 4:1 we read the maiden is behind a veil. All of these elements paint a picture of the day her brothers had been hoping for. Their working class sister was about to be taken into Solomon’s harem. Solomon tells her that her beauty has “ravished his heart” and with a great many more words of praised, we are left with the image of the maiden becoming one of the many, many women in Solomon’s house.
