The phrase above is placed in quotations for the purpose of identifying it as an arrogant concept undertaken by people.

People do not "Establish the Authority of Scripture." Scripture establishes its own authority.

Do you know what this means, and how it takes place?

It is needful to establish the authority of scripture.
Most worldly people are not reading it, so they do not know what it declares about itself.

Until I know you better Jacob59, why don't you say what it means first?
Besides I'm not sure what you have in mind, or even know if I could answer it anyway.

Does The Word of God establish its own authority? Yes? No?

The answer to this question does not depend upon how well you know me, or what you think I have in mind. The question stands upon its own.

It is important to understand how people view scripture when you discuss what scripture says.

I had a professor once who told me he disagreed with Paul’s interpretation of the Old Testament.

He certainly understood what Paul had written, but he didn’t view it as having authority from God. In his mind, his opinion was just as valid as Paul’s.

When people have such an opinion of scripture, their purpose changes. They aren’t trying to understand it in the context it was written and apply it to people’s lives; they are trying to undermine it and convince people it doesn’t apply to their lives.

For some, it would appear, their sole purpose is to undermine the authority of scripture.

    peace to you

    Encouraging me to reply:

If a person does not know Christ as savior the bible can have no authority other than as any ancient set of documents.

    Now it's your turn Jacob59.

Jacob59, you are a newer member.

You have started many threads, some of them contentious.

It appears you have an agenda.

How about stating that agenda or denying that you have one.

Start a thread about it if you like.

"The answer to this question does not depend upon how well you know me, or what you think I have in mind."

    Yes it does.
You don't even bother to say what you think of your own questions.

For some questions I ask I might have an opinion but for others I do not know for certain what the answers are.

Why should I trust you now with all this stuff you put up?

You have not even bothered to make a statement indicating what kind of faith in you have, if any.

All I can assume is that you know something about the bible but your faith is in yourself.

I'm a "non-Baptist Christian" too but my faith is in Jesus Christ, who died in my place and rose again from the dead as it is written according to the scriptures.

'We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the church of God to an high and reverent esteem of the Holy Scriptures; and the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, and the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man's salvation, and many other incomparable excellencies, and entire perfections thereof, are arguments whereby it doth abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God; yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth, and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts.'
