My wife's 2001 Honda Honda Odyssey, just before the pandemic hit, the battery went dead and we couldn't get a new one or recharge the one we had so it has been sitting for a year... What needs to be done before we put in a new battery?... Do we have to drain and put in all new fluids?... What about the gas, that is in the tank?... Do we have to put in all new spark plugs?... Can we get it back in running order or has it been sitting to long?... I'm sure we are not the only case as I know of others and they are facing the same situation... So what is the answer, if there is one?... Brother Glen:confused:

    What I would do:

Check the oil level. Check the radiator fluid level. Check air pressure in the tires. Put in gas treatment. Replace battery. Attempt to start engine.

If it blows up, don’t blame me, I’m not a mechanic.

    Good luck

    peace to you

Yes you can. So long as the gas tank was sealed your fuel should be fine. Go ahead and put in a new battery. Let it run and warm up if you get it started before you drive it. It may be a bit difficult to start because its been sitting. Keep trying till it starts. You should check all the fluids but that doesnt necessarily have to be done before getting it running again.

I’m shocked at that suggestion! I can barely turn over because I’m dead tired. I guess I’m just cranky today.

    peace to you

Turn over and crank again. Should spark up quick.

Cranky every day makes me consistent.

Sorry, Salty, I was trying to make a joke

“shocked” because they are touching the terminals

“turn over”, “dead tired”, “cranky” reference starting a car with a dead battery

I guess if I have to explain the joke, my funny bone is out of wack.

    peace to you

Perhaps he didn’t get the joke, because he didn’t think you had a sense of humor. :Wink

Perhaps. Tastes vary. I'm easily amused. Helps keep from being angry all the time. :Wink

When you say "couldn't...recharge the one we had... Are you saying it would not charge using a battery charger, or that you did not attempt to "jump" or charge the battery? Was the battery more than 3 years old when it failed? Repair shops can test the old battery to see if it needs replacing. Other problems (alternator not working) could cause the battery to lose its charge.

So, you used the old “double joke” technique on me and caused me to spin my tires.

Looks like that puts you in the drivers seat.

    peace to you
