Which curriculum?

    Hi,

    We are considering homeschooling our son (and any more, if the Lord blesses us). My son is only 2years old, so we have some time. My wife will do the teaching, though I promised I will do maths, music and french.

    We know of ACE, but not much about any others. I looked at ABEKA website and it seems you cannot do it if you are abroad (am I right?).

    We are in Australia and ACE is supported here with an academy (providing transcripts) and student conventions. So for us it makes sense. However, I heard from an acquaintance that ACE is slightly dumbed down (i.e, Grade 5 in ACE is equivlent to Grade 3 in Australia). I am not sure if anyone can give us any ideas on this.

    Are there any other homeschooling curriculums, which can be done abroad?

    All of my children are married and have families of their own. They all used ACE and most of my grandchildren have used it too.

    I wouldn't trade it. Dumbed down? Several of my grandchildren have gotten scholarships to secular colleges because of their grade average and the scores they attained on SAT tests plus the college entrance exams...

    I can't think of any reason why you couldn't use A Beka overseas unless there is a shipping issue. All of the materials I used were shipped directly to my home with no problem. I would assume they can ship materials outside of the USA. A Beka also has teaching on DVD's just like your child is in a regular classroom. I know of many missionaries who school their children this way, and they don't live in the USA.

    I was schooled with ACE for about 3 years as a child. It's a good curriculum. As a kid I do remember thinking A Beka was a bit more difficult, especially in Math and Science. I'm not sure that means ACE is dumbed down, more like A Beka is advanced. Both A Beka and ACE students learn to read in kindergarten. The problem we had with ACE was dealing with all the answer keys. It was a hassle. That was many years ago, though, and I don't know if the paces and answer keys are still the same.

    We love Alpha and Omega's Switched on Schoolhouse. It is computer based and keeps all your records for you. It does 95% of the grading and keeps those records also. My daughter loves it too.

    I have done some more research and spoken to some friends that did ACE all the way. ACE is really Christ centred and we like that.

    I also came across a really interesting website called home school reviews. http://www.homeschoolreviews.com/

    What I understand now is that ACE is slower at the beginning to ensure that a concept is understood instead of whizzing through concepts. It then picks up the pace later on, and by high school it has provided a thorough education, equivalent to any shool. ACE does not work if you are going to stop using it and change curriculum, which is why there are negative threads about children who change from ACE to another curriculum.

    I started my college education as an education major, planning on teaching in public schools (isn't funny how God sometimes says no). I am very familiar with many different curriculum plans and I absolutely love ACE.

    I graduated from a public High School, and trust me the things that kids are doing in 11th and 10th are at higher standards than some of the things I was doing my senior year (and I was in all AP classes). ACE biggest plus is mastery of information. There is no way without cheating you can go through a subject and not have a good hold on the material.

    I teach ACE kindergarten and it is very similar to what the public schools teach as far as phonics go. They will be ready to learn how to read next year. ACE teaches a lot of self-discipline too, that is absolutely invaluable!

    I love the curriculum and would be happy to answer any questions. By the way my sister graduated from an ACE system and now has a 4.0 at the university she attends. Another girl she graduated with is going to law school, and also has stellar grades in their system.

    ABEKA is what my grand daughters are on....

    I have never seen 5 and 6 year olds learn so fast....I majored in Music Ed in college, and these girls are what I would call "fast tracking" with ABEKA.

    I highly recommend it.
