Your Opinion On Cherry-Picking Verses.....

Depends of the verse and its application. This one from Exodus is very much relevant for all Christians

 

You have every right to be concerned about the misapplying of holy scriptures.

 

An often off quoted John 8:32, ". . . know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. . . ." Jesus was speaking of knowing Him, John 8:36, ". . . If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. . . ."

 

It's brutal and it generally leads to people being disappointed with God when He doesn't act like their own personal genie who grants their wishes. It generally reveals that a human is thinking they are equal to or greater than God in their personal life so that God becomes their good buddy rather than God being Supreme Lord over every aspect of their lives whereby they need to prostrate themselves. before the King in complete submission to His will.

 

When you see terms like "proof texting", cherry picking, or taking out of context, the implicit charge is you are misapplying scripture. All of us are vulnerable misunderstanding scripture and thinking it means something other than what it actually means. I get charged with doing so quite often, because my understanding of a particular verse or passage differs from the view of others.

So on one hand, the charge may be valid, the verse misapplied, but on the other hand, the effort may be to nullify the verse because the interpreted view differs from that held by the one making the charge.

 

Too bad they didn't go on to the next verse-- "Why do you cry unto me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward!" I think the Living Bible says it as "Stop praying and get the people moving!"

 

It is always better to understand a verse in its context so you know what the heck God is actually talking about. Otherwise you are just walking in on the middle of a conversation and are likely to misunderstand something that you hear.
