Do you believe that smoking cigarettes/pipes/cigars and chewing tobacco is a sin? Why or why not?

They serve no real purpose other then something to be addicted too, and are destructive to your body, the temple the Holy Spirit indwells.

I don't smoke and I do think it's destructive to your body, therefore it's a sin. But wouldn't that make laying out in the sun a sin too since it's destructive to your body?

I don't lay out in the sun. But, wouldn't that make sun exposure a sin?
As far as I ahve ever heard there are no health benefits to smoking and chewing, but there are from sun exposure, vitamin D for one(is that the right one?). I think it is one of those things that call for moderation.

Of course it's a sin. But so is that other big Baptist pastime ... overeating!

Depends on what you're smoking. Oh yea, inhaling is another factor.

yep, anything that damages your body INTENTIONALLY is a sin. Smoking, drinking, overeating, self mutilation, even obsessively overexercising to where your gym time interferes with your service to God!

You see, it's not what you do, but what it does to YOU!

You are absolutely right: It's not what you do; but what it does to you.

For many years, exercise was my addiction. My exercise time took priority over everything else, including time with God and family. About 8 years ago, I rearranged my priorities, and have made it my practice never to exercise on Sunday. For someone else, exercise might be fine on Sunday; for me, it is not.

Yes, Paul said we shouldn't let anything be master over us but God.

Everyone will go smoking or non-smoking. Heaven or hell?

Smoking won't send you to Hell.

It will just make you smell like you've been there...

Thank you for that, IMB. I was listening to radio the other day when a man called in to state emphatically that Johnny Carson could not be going to Heaven because he killed himself with cigarettes! I cringed at the thought of how many non-Christians might have been listening to this. Smoking may kill but it DOESN'T keep you out of Heaven.

It must have been a Catholic and concluded that Johnny Carson committed suicide by smoking.

I once heard a story about when Moody met Spurgeon. Spurgeon opened his door with his usual cigar in hand. Moody exclaimed, "Oh my, no one ever told me that you smoked!!" To which Spurgeon replied, "No one ever told me that you were fat." Don't know if it's true or not, but it is a good story. (Just another reason he's my friend.)

I voted yes it is a sin. I have seen smokers just literally go nuts for a smoke when they don't have one. The only thing worse is when one of them has a cigarette but no fire with which to light there smoke. An intresting saying my Dad use to say when seeing someone smoking there life away.
"Cigarettes; They drain your pocketts and singe's your clothes and makes a chimney out of your nose :D "
It must be some kind of hell to be a slave to a weed. Anything that is so useles, so harmful, and at the same time commands you body to do more of, isn't of Christ. Not to mention how offensive it is to everyone else. Everyone who smokes isn't aware of how bad they smell because there sense of smell doesn't work so well as long as they smoke. They stink even when they're not smoking. Smokers think this smell can be coverd up by a breath mint. The problem is that it not only gives you bad breath it makes you hair and clothing stink as well.
How could something be so adictive, so worthless,so harmful and smell so bad, not be a sin?
    May Christ shine His light On Us All;
    Mike
