Hi, first post. I...this is kind of nerve racking!! You read how posts go a way no one wants them to...hope to avoid that

I would like to know if there is a specific verse that uses the words "personal saviour". I am not talking about the concept...just the specific words. This stems from a conversation that someone had with me that asked if Jesus was my personal saviour...I asked for what verse they were talking about...and they gave me 10 or 12 verses that did not have those words. I quoted:

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

I said I was "saved" based upon this scripture but they insisted accepting Jesus as your personal saviour was necessary. I understand semanitics but is there a verse? Please advise on a verse.

    thanks!
    glad to be here.

Hi Brian, and welcome to Baptist Board! You have brought up something which indeed needs to be discussed. You are right about the phrase 'personal savior' not being in the Bible. The idea behind it is simply that salvation involves a personal, intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ as He indwells you in the person of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9).

The opposite of 'personal savior' would be 'corporate savior' and would involve the idea that because you belonged to a particular group of people (nation, church, family, whatever...) you were saved. Personal savior simply means it is you and Christ and you have died to yourself and been born again in Him.

If, at any time, you truly felt absolutely disgusted with your own self and wanted God to change you entirely, and if you truly put your dependance on that change in Christ Jesus and asked Him to take over everything, then you are saved. He does not turn away anyone who comes to Him in truth.

    It's a personal thing.... [IMG]

I use the Blue Letter Bible online a lot for questions like this. I also use e-sword for searches and that seems to work well for me.

I did not find the specific phrase 'Personal Saviour' in the bible Of course, though Jesus is our Personal Saviour. The bible does mention many times that Jesus is our saviour, and adding personal to it, is fitting. Since he is the one that saved me, since I couldn't do it myself. He is my Personal Saviour.

Here is a link to the search under Blue Letter Bible:
    http://www.blueletterbible.org/tmp_dir/words/p/1133564972-5496.html

After looking at the link, click on the option that list Saviour and you will see where it mentioned Saviour in the Bible, and see how one can come to the term Personal Saviour.

    Oh, btw, Welcome! [IMG]

I think the idea "personal Saviour" is along the lines of "you are not saved by being raised in a Christian home or by being baptized or around Christian people. Each person must be saved individually by grace through faith from that person individually. You are not saved by association, etc."

Jesus made it very personal to Martha:

    Johm 11
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Thank you for your replies. I did not think the term was scriptural(I like to learn when I am wrong though!!!!), although I understand people use convenient and well meaning terms to summarize scripture.

I think of personal Savior as being I have a personal relationship with Jesus because He is my Savior. He is not just my churches Savior, or my families Savior, or the whole christendom Savior. But my Savior, personally mine. I am an individual to Him, not an anonymous person in a group.

'Personal' defines the relationship, as donnA said above. I tell folks- Salvation is not a prayer that you pray, a law that you keep, or a religious mantra. It is a relationship as real as your relationship with your wife, your kids, or your parents; but it is a relationship with Christ and Almighty God. THAT is salvation.

If salvation is not personal, it is not salvation! Must be in the new versions! (Uh oh, don't start that again)
