Having looked into how I may walk in the Spirit, I have often rendered to God my request, to fill me with His Spirit, with an answer of provision of patience that lasts for a time. But at times I discover myself to be angry, who had become angry three evenings last week, thinking the coffee brand daily consumed by me a culprit to some degree. For in days prior, before having yielded an end of drinking it, I went through problems like this, but I know not why in the evening it happened, seeing before then is when I drink it. But now by tapering I endeavor to quit, that I might not experience symptoms due to withdrawal.

Now can you provide me an exhortation, of how I may walk in the Spirit, an any comments on that which I have said?

There are several spiritual disciplines that may help you draw closer to God.

Bible intake, whether reading or listening to sermons.

Have you ever heard of “praying through the psalms?” There are 150 psalms. If you read 5 every day, you will read the psalms every month. Take the day of the month (today is the 4th). Psalm 4 is the first to read. Then add 30. Psalm 34 is next. Add 30. Psalm 64 is next. And so on. On the 31st of a month, read psalm 119, as it is pretty long.

But don’t just read it, look for phrases or words you can pray back to God. If the psalmist writes “the law of the Lord is my delight”, then pray that back, “Lord, let me delight in your word, let me seek it as a deer pants for water in a dry land…” and so on.

You can do the same thing with Proverbs.

One last thing, don’t blame the coffee.

    peace to you

Agree - praying (or singing) through the Psalms has been a huge help to me in my own struggles in recent months.

A habit of prayer throughout the day can also be cultivated. Just before losing your temper, send a quick arrow prayer for humility and patience. Take deliberate steps to refrain from saying what you wanted to say. Go out of your way to do something kind instead. Keep your eyes on that sweet sense of victory when you realise that you have passed through a situation without being angry. I struggle with a short temper too, and usually I find that the root of the problem is my pride. I remind myself, "He must increase but I must decrease".

On the other hand, coffee might indeed be an issue. My husband has given it up and it has worked wonders for him!

It helps to keep in mind that God is Sovereign. He has a plan and He is executing His plan. Be thankful for His great love towards us. Gospel radio helps also.

    Thank you for the advice.

Another problem I have is that I start joking around and end up insulting people by accident, having little control over what is coming out of my mouth. That doesn't happen all the time but it does happen.

In James letter he devotes much time to the problems that arise from the uncontrolled tongue.

Best advice I know is just to realize you do not have to comment on everything said. Practice listening.

    peace to you
