Cubemaster Gold I thought I would put up something fun. This is a Tetris clone game. http://w1.435.telia.com/~u43509647/

NET Bible This is a free HTML Bible. It is a very solid translation that has some very helpful footnotes. http://www.bible.org/

System Security Suite I have used this handy little cleaning tool for quite some time. "Description: System Security Suite (3S) is the program to remove internet tracks and junk files from your computer. It allows you to delete Cookies, clear Internet Explorer Cache, delete index.dat Files, clear Typed URLs, Windows Temp Folder and much more. You can also specify custom folder locations with file masks, which will be cleaned in addition to the selected items. In addition, the program allows you to view and optionally remove or lock programs that launch automatically at Windows startup." http://www.igorshpak.net/

I thought it would be nice to add to this thread some of our favorite sites for downloading freeware. Here are three of mine:

Nonags The Nonags site posts only freeware that is truly free and contains no adware or spyware. I have yet to have any trouble with software that receives five or six ducks (the highest rating) from Nonags. http://www.nonags.com/nonags/

WebAttack The freeware section at WebAttack identifies freeware versus adware and rates the software up to five stars. I have found that I can trust software from WebAttack if it receives four or five stars. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/freeware.html

Download.com I like to read the user reviews at download.com before I try new freeware. However, I have found the ratings at Nonags and WebAttack to be more reliable. http://download.com.com/2001-20-0.html?legacy=cnet

Hope this has been helpful, and I hope to see some more of your favorite freeware programs and download sites!

I downloaded Avant Browser and it works GREAT! The only thing I don't like is that it takes up so much more of my screen than IE did. Any way to get rid of some of it? Also I miss my copy and paste buttons being readily available, but I haven't fooled with it enough yet to find out just what I can do. :D

    Thanks,
    Sue

All you have to do is right click on the toolbar somewhere to get the dropdown menu. It will allow you to unlock or lock the toolbar, remove or add toolbars (such as Roboform, if you have it), and customize the buttons. Also, if you have any more questions, I suggest going to the Avant Browser Forum, where they are always ready to help. http://forum.avantbrowser.com/YaBB.cgi

    Open Office - www.openoffice.org

Free Office Suite (its a big download so it takes a while, but the CD is only 7.95$). It opens and saves files in MS format, so you don't have to worry about not be compatible anymore.

Beat you to it on the previous page ;)

The file to download for Windows is 51.4 megs so you can even download it with a 56k modem, just have something to eat, sleep, go out, etc while it's downloading.

Avant Browser I just thought I would let you all know that Avant Browser 8 is through the beta phase and the latest build is better than ever! http://www.avantbrowser.com/

    From the website:

"Latest Release: Avant Browser 8.0 Build 728, 05.30.2003

Have you ever tried surfing with a MDI browser?

Try Avant Browser, an upgrade to Internet Explorer. Avant Browser is a fast, stable, user-friendly, versatile multi-window browser.

Avant Browser is freeware. That's right. No cost to you ever. No limitations. You can donate if you want, but it's certainly not required.

Avant Browser now supports AI-RoboForm. AI-RoboForm can help you remember passwords and fill out any online form with just one click of a button. Passwords are securely stored on your computer and protected by a master password. You can find the latest RoboForm here.

Top10 reasons to use Avant Browser

Flash Animation Filter: More than 85% of all flash animation on web pages is advertising. These flash files are pretty large, and normally take up to 90% of the size of the page you're visiting. With Avant Browser you can save this bandwidth by blocking the download of these flash files with just one easy click. Avant Browser also provides options to block downloads of pictures, videos, sounds and ActiveX components. With these options users can control their bandwidth and speed up page loading.

Built-in Pop-up Stopper: Easily eliminate unwanted pop-up pages automatically with just one click.

Additional Mouse Functions: If you click a link in the web page with the middle mouse button, the link will be opened in a new window in the background. And there are two handy mouse gestures in Avant Browser. The first allows you to navigate backward one step by holding the right button down and then clicking on the left button simultaneously. The second allows you to navigate forward one step by reversing the buttons used: hold left, and click right.

Multi-Window Browsing: Browse multiple web pages simultaneously. All opened pages can be easily stopped, refreshed, closed or arranged with one click.

Real Full Screen Mode and Alternative Full Desktop mode: When you enable Full Screen Mode, all you see is the webspace, with no toolbars or other clutter. They are simply autohidden! Move your mouse over the top or bottom and find the toolbar and tab bar respectively. Avant Browser also provides Full Desktop Mode, which is the same as Full screen mode, but differs in that your windows task bar stays visible.

Built-in Google Search Engine: Avant Browser provides a built-in search engine, Google. Built-in search engine enables user to search for web pages, images, groups, directories, news, lyrics and software in Internet. International users will be glad to know that you can set avant to utilize any of up to 64 google mirrors by default!

Excellent user support: Excellent user support is provided via an organized, helpful forum where many of your questions have already been asked, and you can find solutions to almost all of your problems. Furthermore, you can put in your 2 cents with a special requests section where you get to influence what goes into the browser next!

Safe Recovery: If Avant Browser is closed improperly, all open web pages are saved and will be automatically reopened at next startup.

Translation: Avant Browser is available in many many languages to suit our international audience. If you your language is not available yet (see above), you can easily translate a small file and support for your native language can be included in the next version. It's quite simple.

Skins: Express your creativity by making a skin for Avant using a custom, easy to use program called Avant Browser Skin Factory, or use any of the many and varied skins made by other users."

I hope you all find it as useful as I have! It is my favorite browser! http://www.avantbrowser.com/

P.S. If you have an older version (especially 7.x), you should un-install it before installing the new version.

AI RoboForm I asked in an earlier post if any of you had tried this program, but I can say now that I have tried it and really like it. I have especially enjoyed using it now that it is fully supported by Avant Browser!

Here is the description of the program from Webattack, where it received the highest rating( http://www.webattack.com/get/roboform.shtml ):

"AI RoboForm is a push-button web form filler with some serious Artificial Intelligence (AI) inside. It allows you to define your personal profile or "usual" responses to a web form. This information is then saved, and when you need to fill a form, just click "Fill Forms" button, and form is filled out. AI RoboForm is fully client-based, so it is very fast, it never disables web site functions, and it works even in pop-up HTML windows. The most important feature of AI RoboForm is high accuracy - it fills 95% of all fields correctly."

Hey, I just wanted to tell everyone thanks, especially for the Avant Browser link. I'm using most of the programs suggested here, and they have prevented a lot of headaches. One program that doesn't seem to work very well, though is SpywareGuard. Every time I run a search with AdAware, I usually pick up a few cookies and things (70 some-odd to date). I'll add my own, too, although it is somewhat technical so not for the faint-of-heart.

Here's the link, use at your own risk, but I sure like it. It's called No Hands Backup. It's great for backing up folders onto a different hard drive, and, of course, it's free.

    No Hands Backup

I haven't tried the other programs they have. Be forewarned, however, there is no technical support and there are no help files. It's kind of a learn as you go thing.

XP Smoker I have just started using this great little power tool from WareSoft Software. Here is the basic description from the XP Smoker website:

"XP Smoker will do the following things for your Windows XP driven system.

Reduce subsystem bottlenecks throughout your system
Decrease application and boot load times
Increase the stability of Windows XP
Increase web browsing anywhere from 10% to 100% faster
Secure Internet Explorer features and the Control Panel applet."

Although with any such program one must proceed with caution, it is pretty user friendly. Just read the help descriptions and go the the XP Smoker forum to ask questions if unsure about what settings to choose.

Nonags gives XP Smoker its highest rating (six ducks).

    http://www.xp-smoker.com/

I would be interested in any feedback from others who use this program.

AIDA32 3.61 Webattack gives this program its highest rating (five stars). Here is the description of the program at Webattack:

"AIDA32 is system information and benchmarking tool with full hardware & software information on 80 pages. It comes with a built-in hardware database and physical information for CPU, motherboard, hard disks, optical drives, chipset and much more. It can display the information on-screen, print it, or save it as a report in various formats including HTML, CSV and XML. The built in diagnostics module can help you find potential problems. AIDA32 offers support for ADO/ODBC database connections as well as TCP/IP remote access. Additional features include command-line switches, network audit and audit statistics and network management. An easy to use report wizard allows you to create detailed reports in the format of your choice or save the information to a database. The program is extremely well featured and very nicely done. On top of all, it does not require an install, but runs standalone from its own folder."

    http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php

Weather Pulse Webattack also gives this program a five star rating. So far I really like using it when I need to keep close tabs on the weather. Here is the description from Webattack:

"Weather Pulse is a weather monitoring tool that that displays detailed weather information for selected US cities, as well as popular satellite images from around the globe. It includes weather alert options, 10 day forecast, hourly forecast, detailed forecast and more. The satellite images can be sent via email and also saved to file. Weather Pulse integrates all the information into a simple, easy to use interface and also provides a tray icon that displays the current temperature (we had to change the font settings for proper display). You can also add custom radar and weather images, view animated images and monitor multiple zip codes. A nicely done program that puts local and global weather information into easy reach from the system tray."

    http://www.tropicdesigns.net/weatherpulse.html

Actually, I do not keep Weather Pulse running in my system tray. I just turn it on and off when i am going to be online and want to track the weather (for example, to know if the men's softball team is going too get rained out or not).

Anyway, I hope these freeware suggestions have been helpful so far, and I hope to keep seeing more posted here by others. [IMG]

Don't remember if this freeware has been mentioned or not. AM-Deadlink is a program that searches your favorites and tells you which ones are no longer active.

I find it to be indespensible if you have more than 100 favorite web sites in your folder.

I just installed the Avant Browser. It works well enough with a lot of options. The only thing I am having a problem with is with my scroll wheel on my mouse. It doesn't work with Avnat. Has anyone else encountered this? If so, can it be fixed?

    Thank you

I had a problem with the older version but this new one seems to be working better.

Also had the same problem on an older machine - Pentium 200.
