More than one poster has asserted we have been adopted, referring to us becoming children of God.

One poster claims we become adopted when we are born anew. No scripture was given to support this mistaken view.

Another poster claimed there are three aspects to adoption.
    1) It was claimed Romans 8:15 referred to our being children of God because we had the Spirit of Adoption. Thus we had been adopted. This is utter nonsense. The Spirit of Adoption is simply referring the Holy Spirit which was given as a pledge to our future adoption. Our "sonship" comes from being born spiritually into God's family, not from adoption.

    2) Adoption does indeed refer to our bodily redemption at Christ's second coming. This is the only actual way it is used which refers to receiving the full benefits as sons under the New Covenant. This view matches the Lexicons and the context of every usage.

    3) Romans 9:4, referring to the Old Covenant adoption of Israel was mentioned to support the idea of many meanings. This usage is entirely non-germane to the topic.

Here is the simple fact, we came children of God when God put us spiritually in Christ. In Christ we are born anew. Thus children of God, not through adoption, but through spiritual rebirth. Now as spiritual children, we will receive our full benefits in the future, including the redemption of our bodies, and this future action Paul refers to as adoption.

The reverse etymological fallacy is to apply a modern meaning to a translated word, when the root meaning was the intended message. Thus to claim awarding full benefits at maturity according to the meaning at the time of writing should be replaced with the modern meaning of putting a person into a family is etymological error.

Yet another false claim, refuted by the OP. Thus obfuscation on display. See Romans 8:23

Not according to Romans 8:23, ". . . waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. . . ."

I agreed with Van and I also agree with the above, however We are given the Spirit which indwells us and we can call God Father but aren't we manifested as sons of God at the resurrection?

And Jesus answering said to them, 'The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage, but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage; for neither are they able to die any more -- for they are like messengers -- and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again. Luke 20:34-36

At the redemption of the body they are manifested as sons of God? The adoption to wit.

Briefly, adoption is in the context of inheritance, and not just inheritance but becoming joint heirs with Christ. Of course you are correct when you say our sonship is secure in Christ but the inheritance is in heaven for the Christian. consider this verse.

3 Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

So, the inheritance for the Christian is in heaven and here we are in earth bound bodies. So, the Spirit of God indwelling these earth bound bodies secures the coming inheritance by adoption of these bodies that will finally be changed and a glorified body like the glorious body of Jesus Christ will replace it.
This is the context of adoption. I quote some in Rom 8.

10 And if Christ [be] in you, the body s dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

You see how joint inheritance, meaning it is not divided up among the family but that the family inherits all as one. Therefore we must wait until we are glorified together, at the same time.

Eph 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

    Now, back to Romans 8;

20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

So, according to what we read the Holy Spirit is both the seal of the believer as a son and the earnest of our inheritance, being the only thing at the present time about us that can be called glorious.

This is arguably the strongest argument in scripture for the pre-trib rapture of the church, which is the body of Christ where the Spirit dwells.

Adoption was a very common practice in the Roman Empire. If a man had no sons, he needed an heir since women could not inherit.. The most well-known examples of this are the adoption by Julius Caesar of his great-nephew Octavian, later Augustus, and the adoption by Augustus of his step-son Tiberius after the early deaths of his grandchildren. It is likely that Jairus, the synagogue ruler in Luke 8 etc. had adopted a son since his daughter is described in the Greek as his 'only begotten' child.

The point is that by our adoption we become heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.

I see that several are using the reverse root fallacy to back fit joining with Christ as the meaning of the Greek word translated "adoption." Did anyone object to this valid lack of efficacy? Nope.

Folks just read Romans 8:23, adoption refers to our bodily redemption at Christ's second coming. Our indwelt Holy Spirit is a pledge for that future bestowal of our full benefits as a spiritual child of God.
