    was originally racist IIRC

originally promoted salvation by keeping law in OT and during “tribulation”. IIRC

As a new Christian and then a teenager in about 1963 or so, it was my first reference Bible I bought with $5 I got for Sunday school attendance. Of course it wasn't a large print edition.

Scofield was my first Bible as well. It was required as a good indoctrination into dispensationalism and pre-trib rapture theory.

Scofield was my first Bible 51 years ago. Got it for my ninth birthday from my mother. I've got Thompson Chain Reference Bible that I've had for 40+ years. I still use both.

My first bible was an old scofield NKJV. By Dad got it for me when I was in high school. I still have it although it is pretty bad shape. I got myself a new scofield NKJV a few years ago. It is my main bible. As with any study bible. You have notes. Which the author writes down. Which can be very helpful in a study, which is why it is called a study bible. As with any book, or listening to any pastor. What is written should not be taken as gospel truth. But should be tested. Someone mentioned the GAP theory. I remember as a teenage getting resistance from my non believing friends about creation. Saying science did not match creation. I remember at the time, I read Scofield gap theory notes. And was so excited. I finally had answers I could give.. I studied and proclaimed that theory until about ten years ago when I went to a creation museum down near Cincinnati Ohio.. where I recieved a different view. I purchased some books and studied them, and have since read other theories about a young earth creation. And no longer believe the GAP theory

However, I would not change my go to bible because I disagree with something the Bible has written. The rest of the Bible is worth keeping it. I just learned to test all spirits.. No matter what Bible I have read or seen others.. I have seen no english language bible is perfect.. Which to me, helps me study harder.. and not rely on what other people think,. But seek Gods wisdom.

    Anyway, hope this helps

Old translations, old Study Bibles, old commentaries and old Systematic Theology texts need updating.
Knowledge increases and times change, so should they.

If you are interested in the Scofield Bible notes because you are a dispensationalist, an acceptable more updated Study Bible would be Charles Ryrie’s Study Bible.

The old Scofield is the only Scofield that can be trusted. It will help teach the God ordained systematic theology that is so important to arrive at the right doctrines of the faith. Scofield highlights the two main features that one must understand to be well grounded in the faith and the mind of God. They are the dispensations of God and the covenants of God.

God's evangelism to the world is through the Jewish nation and is a New Testament gospel proposition called "the gospel of God," the theme of the NT, and described in the NT epistles. The divine principle of God's dealing with the world, both Jews and gentiles, in this age is by grace, but it is because of the faithfulness of God to keep his promise to Abraham in what we know today as the Abrahamic Covenant given to him in Gen 12 where he promised Abraham that though his seed (whom we know now as Jesus Christ, both the son of Abraham and the Son of God) that in him all the kindred of the earth will be blessed. This is the reason there is a gospel to the whole world after the cross of Christ, unlike before the cross of Christ.

The strength of the Old Scofield is in helping the reader see these great covenants of God and how he has providentially guided history to finally arrive through the last Adam what he had intended through the first Adam, a perfect earthly environment for a perfect people of God, world without end. Meanwhile we are left in open mouthed wonder at the wisdom and love of our God as we learn of his character and his ways throughout the scriptures.

Unteachable men who approach Bibles with preconcieved notions and who are unable to learn need not think the Scofield will help them any.

    Note:
    The first phrase that appears in the scriptures that is directly addressed to gentiles was written in 58 AD by the apostle Paul. He says this;

Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
He began this promise in the Abrahamic Covenant in Gen 12, and built on it after that. Here is the definition of the gospel of God in the same epistle, Romans.

24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel (Paul calls the gospel of God my gospel because he is the apostle to the world of gentiles), and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

Ga 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The blessing of Abraham is that portion of the Abrahamic Covenant that promises salvation to the world through his greater seed, Jesus Christ.

I learned this by reading my Old Scofield and I thank God that my pastor gave it to me when I was 23 years old. It has been a blessing.
