    This could be interesting!

    - 20 years after the Amiga Operating System was first unveiled to the public it is returning, better than ever, thanks to a joint effort by Amiga Inc. and Hyperion Entertainment VOF. This new version of the famous OS takes all the features that made the original AmigaOS great, and updates them with the latest requirements for cross-platform 21st Century computing devices of all sorts. From desktop computers to mobile hardware, AmigaOS4.0 delivers a uniquely accessible, powerful, and above all fun way to use technology.

Is this for real? There seems to be little information on the site? It would be great to see and O/S on the market though.

It looks like they are late on their release, this is from the actuall Amiga Web site:

In 2001, Amiga, Inc. licensed the development of AmigaOS 4.0 to AmigaOne Partners, collectively Hyperion VOF and Eyetech Group Ltd. Now scheduled for commercial release in early 2005, AmigaOS 4.0 moves the Amiga Operating System to the modern Power PC chips enabling the easy use of off-the-shelf components from third party vendors.

AmigaOS 4.0 SDK available for download

Hyperion Entertainment is proud to announce the availability of the Software Development Kit Version 51.22 for the AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-Release.

The new SDK features the new gcc 4.0.2 compiler toolchain as well as updated header files for AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-Release update 4.

The SDK download is available for all interested parties here (NOTE: Alternate download location due to heavy server load)

The SDK is available in two versions: A 160 MB download that contains everything to get you started, including compiler and contributed libraries, and a cut-down version that contains the compiler and documentation only.

The AmigaOS was years ahead of its time and it's a shame that it never emerged as a contender. Since MS was able to crush mighty IBM's OS/2, I doubt that Commodore could have stood against them, but the AmigaOS was very good.
