    Chickenlady,

RightfromWrong is pretty much on target IMO. I taught on this two Sundays ago at our Sunday night Bible Study.

"tongues will cease" - people miss that.

Another thing to remember is that people do not use tongues in the way (I and alot of others) believe they were - they were actual languages and that is clear from Acts 2.

There are other scriptures that speak of tongues and people often point out why an interpreter would have to be present if they were a known language. I believe it was so everyone could understand - the interpreter was not interpreting an "unknown" new language he was interpreting an actual dialect.

Well, I guess I'll stop here because I was just looking at the second page and there's alot of info their too. I really need to start reading the whole thread before posting.. [IMG] [IMG]

If you click on the link ABOVE it will have my 8 page study in very easy to understand form. This is all you would need to prove your point. I let scripture speak for itself, not alot of mumbo jumbo.

WHY WAS THE GIFT OF TONGUES GIVEN AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM ?

WHAT WAS THE GIFT OF TONGUES ?

WHAT WAS THE PROPER USE OF TONGUES IN THE CHURCH ? 2 pages.

WHAT COULD BE HAPPENING TODAY SOME REALISITC VEIWS

    A PRIVATE PRAYER LANGUAGE

    MY CONCLUSION

I heartily agree that tongues does not exist biblically today. I also agree that "that which is perfect" is the Bible and not Jesus for the reasons that have already been posted.

I only have trouble with one part. In I Corinthians 13:12, Paul says:

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

That which is done in part shall be done away and we shall put away childish things - FOR...then shall I know even as also I am known.

How does the Bible help us to know as we are known? I cannot seem to reconcile that.

    Chickenlady,

Biblically, there is little support for or against what has been described as tongues.

Being able to converse in several languages, and able to proclaim the Gospel in 2, any language I do not know - is UNKNOWN.

What is usually missed (DHK may have covered some of this as well) is that the intent of people speaking in an unknown language is usually not for the glory and growth of the kingdom (the proclamation of the Gospel).

I.e., if I wrote this in Spanish ... you would need a translator and with a good translator some of the nuance of my post would be lost. That is kinda what Paul said about the use of languages.

Are there tongues today? Yes, there are languages today. Do churches claim to use the tongues of angels, of God, and of private languages? Yes they claim that. Do these churches use languages in the manner set forth by Paul - no. Are there churches that conduct their services in a foreign language? Yes. Do these churches use translators as Paul directed? Yes, most of these churches do use languages as directed by Paul.

Does your friend's church use languages as directed in the Bible? Most likely not.

    Regards

The important thing to remember is that "tongues" are always spoken languages. For scriptural reasoning against the modern day use of it in Charismatic churches, read 1Corinthians 14. But bear in mind that languages have not disappeared from the earth, nor the need to preach the gospel in them.

    *Hat tip </  )

    Hey, ChrisTag!

Remember that in 1Cor 13, "tongues" is never spoken of as being "in part." We prophecy in part, and we know in part. Those are the "parts" that shall be done away. But tongues are not mentioned as being "in part."

I feel that much that has been written here, is in reaction against the gift of tongues, as found in Charismatic Churches today.

It is one thing to say, that "tongues shall cease", and then try to conclude from this, that they no longer exist in the Church today. This of course is more wishful thinking that reality. There is NO evidence from the passage of 1 Cor. 13, WHEN this gift will cease. It goes on to say in this verse, "whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away". Are you guys saying that all knowledge has ben done away with? I don't think so. Then, why should you conclude that tongues have already been done away with? If tongues is indeed foreign languages, which the speaker uses never having learnt it, then why would the Holy Spirit remove this gift from the Church, seeing that it is very important? Nay, I feel that much that has been said here is from a bias against the gift itself, rather than what the Word of God actually teaches. You just cannot build a doctrine on one verse, where the passage its in makes it not too clear as to what it is saying.

I agree with much of your post, SavedbyHISGrace. Especially about cessation often being reactionary interpretation to the Charismatic excesses.

This may be a little off-topic, but I believe it's tied in with the "tongues" thingie.

My wife received a set of miraculous healings. In December, 2000, she was a monitor in a schoolbus that overturned. Her injuries were more severe than many a person younger than she, who died. She had both lungs punctured by ribs, virtually every other abdominal organ bruised & battered, severe internal bleeding, numerous fractures of most of the bones in her upper body.

The first miracle was that she lived at all. The second was that she continued to live after having lost half her blood to internal bleeding. The third was that she healed so well that today her only complications are occasional muscle spasms, & that she can't turn her head completely nor raise her right arm above the shoulder. The fourth miracle is that HER MENTAL FACULTIES WERE COMPLETELY UNAFFECTED!

I'll simply disbelieve anyone who says God doesn't perform miracles any more. I SAW ALL THIS FIRSTHAND, and I promise you, it wasn't just "luck"!

Who can PROVE the Holy Spirit no longer bestows the gift of "tongues" any more? After all, both healings and tongues are Spiritual gifts.

One thing...We used no special "healer" with my wife...We used only the prayers of a group of Christians. No "laying on of hands", "prayer cloths", or anything similar...just good, ole-fashioned fervent PRAYER.

Then according to your way of thinking,2 Timothy 3:16 SHOULD read "Only SOME scripture is given by inspiration of God,and is profitable for Doctrine..."
My Holy Bible tells me that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God,and is profitable for doctrine..."

I have heard that line you gave before by others, but it is not scriptural.I do believe that that was taught to you and you have used it as was taught. But God's word is the final authority, not our oppinions of the words of God.
Even I used to use that line so don't feel like I am picking on you.Just trying to sharpen some iron is all.

Any discussion regarding "tongues" is best to first of all define what is meant. Tongues as used in scripture are spoken languages. The "gift" of tongues is the ability to communicate the gospel in those languages.

Secondly, determine where it comes from and mark its course through history and prophecy. In the majority of cases where I have posted regarding this issue, the fact that languages are an imposed judgment of God upon the human race at the Tower of Babel is too often forgotten. The word used for the cessation of "tongues" is different in 1Cor 13 than the word used for prophecy and knowledge. Prophecy and knowledge will cease suddenly, while "tongues" uses a word that means "to run out."

Whatever you believe about the spiritual gifts of prophecy and knowledge, tongues is in a different class, and the gift will not disappear suddenly, but will go away when it has fully run its course and is no longer needed. Today, we DO still need to communicate the gospel in other languages. When shall they end? I suspect very close to the time that the judgment imposed by God that we are currently under is lifted and we are able to "know even as also we are known" referred to in 1Cor 13.

    Consistency, thou art a jewel.
You quote the anti-charismatics when it comes to tongues, but you'll run straight to a Word of Faith guy to support your belief in tithing.

OTOH, I believe neither is for the present day Christian.

    robycop,

I know your post is several days old now, but what a wonderful testimony of healing for your wife! Im so glad to hear it!

But I don't think the gift of healing is in any way tied to the gift of tongues. It never says that healing will stop, as it does about tongues.
