    The NIV Challenge

The first 5 people to answer these questions using their NIV will receive $50.00 from The Baptist Pillar. This is not gambling, contest rules may be found at the bottom of this. You must use the NIV and you must get the verses right.

    READY.

INSTRUCTIONS: Using the New International Version, answer the following questions. Do not rely on your memory. You must take the answer from the verse (not from footnotes but from the text).

    1. Fill in the missing words in Matthew 5:44. "Love your enemies, ________ them that curse you, ______ ______ to them that hate you, and pray for them that _____ _____ ______ and persecute you."

    2. According to Matthew 17:21, what two things are required to cast out this type of demon?

    3. According to Matthew 18:11, why did Jesus come to earth?

    4. According to Matthew 27:2, what was Pilate's first name?

    5. In Matthew 27:35, when the wicked soldiers parted His garments, they were fulfilling the words of the prophet. Copy what the prophet said in Matthew 27:35 from the NIV.

    6. In Mark 3:15, Jesus gave the apostles power to cast out demons and to __________?

    7. According to Mark 7:16, what does a man need to be able to hear?

    8. According to Luke 7:28, what was John? (teacher, prophet, carpenter, etc.) What is his title or last name?

    9. In Luke 9:55, what did the disciples not know?

    10. In Luke 9:56, what did the Son of man not come to do? And, what did He come to do?

    11. In Luke 22:14, how many apostles were with Jesus?

    12. According to Luke 23:38, in what three languages was the superscription written?

    13. In Luke 24:42, what did they give Jesus to eat with His fish?

    14. John 3:13 is a very important verse, proving the deity of Christ. As Jesus spoke, where was the Son of man?

    15. What happened each year as told in John 5:47

    16. In John 7:50, what time of day did Nicodemus come to Jesus?

    17. In Acts 8:37, what is the one requirement for baptism?

    18. What did Saul ask Jesus in Acts 9:67?

    19. Write the name of the man mentioned in Acts 15:34.

    20. Study Acts 24:6-8. What would the Jew have done with Paul? What did the chief captain command?

    21. Copy Romans 16:24 word for word from the NIV.

    22. First Timothy 3:16 is perhaps the greatest verse in the New Testament concerning the deity of Christ. In this verse, who was manifested in the flesh?

    23. In the second part of First Peter 4:14, how do [they] speak of Christ? And, what do Christians do?

    24. Who are the three Persons of the Trinity in First John 5:7?

    25. Revelation 1:11 is another very important verse that proves the deity of Christ. In this verse Jesus said, "I am the A_______ and O_____, the _______ and the____________:"

    CONTEST RULES:

You will not be able to answer any of these question from the NIV.

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

Please don't beat on us for this. We only mean to point out the FACT that there is a difference between versions. And, if a difference then one must be right and the other wrong. You decide which is right and which is wrong and stop halting between two (or more) opinions.

We have given you facts and have not stated any opinion. We have not set ourselves up as an authority. The Word of God is The Authority and our prayer is that He will make up for our lack.

    In Christ,
    The Baptist Pillar

    Heeheehee

    Here's a new discussion.

I'll bet none of us have ever seen these comments before.

Now that we've been presented with the truth, we can all throw our ungoldy, atheistic NIV's in the garbage and run out and buy the real Word of God.

    Pioneer,

If I take your quiz, will you take my Find These Passages in the Earliest Greek Manuscripts quiz and my Read the Footnotes in the NIV quiz?

    Joshua

P.S. If I take the quiz, can I use my NRSV instead of the NIV?

OW! My tongue is now stuck in my cheek. Help!

"25. Revelation 1:11 is another very important verse that proves the deity of Christ. In this verse Jesus said, "I am the A_______ and O_____, the _______ and the____________:"

I looked in every version I could find for the answer in Revelations 1:11 and I could not find it. HOWEVER when I looked to Revelations 1:8 we find our answer:

I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. :D

Just thought I'd point that out :D

    Until Next Post, Adam

Is this for real? I mean, you've got to be kidding, right? Please excuse my reaction. I just discovered that there were "Only KJV" people still around when I started reading this board a few weeks ago. I thought that the advances in translation and the discovery of earlier manuscripts put the KJV in the "early English translation" columns long ago.

My amusement is not provocative, it is genuine. How in the world does this prove that the King James Version is more accurate in comparison to the NIV when the King James Version is the standard being used to make the comparison?

Talk about circular reasoning! If you want to prove that the KJV is more accurate than the NIV, you would compare both translations to the objective standard, which would be the earliest and most reliable Greek texts (which were, by the way, discovered after the KJV was completed).

I like your idea, Joshua. If a comparison is made on that objective basis, then the KJV falls short of the NIV with regard to accuracy in translation, not to mention the many changes in usage and structure in the English language itself since 1611.

    THE DESPERATION CONTINUES . . .

He's stopped responding to the legitimate questions and resorted to playing games. Your silly exercise in futility is worthless, and would simply prove that the NIV and KJV use different words in different order . . . duh!

    Rockfort,

Do you think you're cute? I don't, and I don't believe anyone with any reverence whatsoever for God's Word (of whatever translation) would either.

Do you think you're justified because you have nothing but contempt for the KJV? Do you think you have somehow done God a service? Well you have not. You have dishonored the Name and Person of Jesus Christ with your invidious and sacreligious ranting.

How could anyone, ANYONE, in whom dwells the Spirit of Christ say the things you have said even in jest?

I could, but then again I have a sense of humor.

The survey belonged in the humor forum in the first place. Rockfort treated it with all the seriousness it deserved.

    Joshua

P.S. #7, by the way, is my favorite.

O.K. I have a serious question here. I cannot imagine that anyone in my age group (18-40) would be able to find the KJV readable or useable, in light of its antiquated language and the advances in manuscript discovery and translation that have improved significantly in the last forty years or so.

I'm still amazed at the discovery that there is a KJV-only movement among Baptists. I am curious as to the age of the people that hold this view. It would seem to me that KJV Only people would be from the older generation.

    ellis,

Don't be ridiculous. The only reason you find the KJV unreadable is because you are not used to reading it. That's all.

Do you honestly think that the English language has changed drastically in the last forty years? What about 100? Ever read Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn? Or Sherlock Holmes? That was the language of the common literate man. Sound anything like the KJV?

    Readability is not an issue.

BTW, I'm 36 and I read the KJV like it was the morning paper. My oldest girl is 9 and she has no more of a struggle reading the KJV than she would the morning paper. My second oldest is 7 and she struggles with Sally, Dick and Jane.
