I realize string bikinis, spaghetti-strapped blouses, and reaaally short skirts are inappropriate, but what about the "gray-area" stuff like:

    *tight/form-fitting jeans
    *thong sandals
    *tank tops
    *overly-baggy pants
    *bandannas

Is it inappropriate for Christians to wear things like these? Can you think of any other debatable apparel?

I wear thong sandals. I am not sure how this inappropriate.

I wear tank tops in my own home in the summer because it is cooler to sleep in. I think this is appropriate.

The other stuff, I don't wear, but I think they can either 1.) cause bad thoughts when form fitting is seen or 2.) align you with groups you should not be aligned with.

I am not sure that in and of themselves, they are right or wrong.

Me too. For some reason shoes like flip-flops/etc. raise eyebrows among my congregation members. Most of them are older (40+). Do you think traditionalism causes people to think so skeptically?

I agree with you, but isn't that subjective? An argument that I often hear is "yes, form fitting clothes can cause bad thoughts, but so can thong sandals if the observer has a foot fetish".

How far should we Christians go in protecting the unsaved at the expense of our own taste in appropriate clothing, especially when there are so many opinions about what is proper and improper?

Many denominations have much "stricter" rules for clothing than even the extreme Baptists. I was involved with a Christian School ministry that had strict guidelines:
No open toed shoes, sleeves must cover the wrist, no jewelry, no blouses that button down the front (they may "gap"), no necklace other than choker style, ladies must wear hose at all times, coulottes not slacks, et al.

When I agreed to speak at Seminars with this group, I stated my own preferences were very different, but THEY may following these rules a part of the contract. I followed it 4 years, as did my wife and children.

We consider the same now - I work occasionally as a "fill in" at a State office. I must wear a suit and tie, regular dress shoes (not cowboy boots), etc. If they pay me, I opt to give up my freedom.

In Christ we are free. SOME folks cannot handle "freedom" and want to be told what to do and how to dress. Look at them as a "weaker" brother or sister and help them.

    Say what?
    How can these be sinful?

I'm not responsable for someone elses illness. And will wear what i want as long as it is modest, and keeps me covered where I need to be covered, and believe me at my size, I have a lot I want covered. If someone has a problem with my shoes, best I can say to them is tought luck.

Someone send me some ashes out of their fireplace so I can repent.... I go barefoot most of the time, half the time even in the snow.
I feel shoes are evil. They restrict movement, and have bad effects on the toes. Very constrictive, and as the feet have nerves which lead to every part of your body, it's dangerous to try to fit them into today's over-priced ill-fitting fashion statements. It can lead to major health problems.
    Burn them shoes!

I have to agree it's a freedom issue. Christ gives us the freedom and no one should take that away.

This issue has always bothered me. I have heard the verses that they pull out and don't see that they really jive with what's being preached.

I wear skirts a lot because they are more comfortable and they hide the evils left over from having three babies. I feel more like a woman in skirts and dresses. That's my preference. I have problem with the "no Shorts issue". I think that a pair of shorts(Decent length) look a lot better than sitting down in a short skirt. There are people that go around in shorter skirts thinking that they are okay with the Lord because they aren't wearing shorts.

I don't get the open toed shoes thing. Didn't they wear sandles in Jesus's time? Apparel changes and we need to follow the intent of our hearts when we choose what to wear.

Once upon a time, I posted a small dissertation on my thoughts about strong, moderate, and weak Christians. A lot of the Christians that consider themselves strong Christians are actually moderate ones. This is because even though they have full knowledge and understanding of our liberty in Christ, they place their own liberty in Christ before their concern for others. In other words, there's still a focus on self, no matter how much we want to deny that. Pardon me for doing so, but this can be pointed out by semi-quoting a statement from this very thread: "If someone has a problem with my (fill in the blank), best I can say to them is tough luck."

Strong Christians are the ones that understand their liberty in Christ--but place concern for others in front of that.

And of course, weak Christians are the ones that tell you "dress the way I want you to dress or I'm gonna question your salvation."

Romans 14 tells us 2 things: Meat and drink are not of the kingdom. That said, however, Paul goes on to say "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak." He also starts out Romans 15 with this statement: "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves."

How far do we go to "please others"? As far as your personal liberty allows you. The thing I teach the teens is not that they have to wear a certain style of dress or particular set of clothes; I teach them to ask themselves three questions:

    1) Is what I'm wearing/doing pleasing God, or is it pleasing my flesh?

    2) Is what I'm wearing/doing causing someone else to stumble?

    3) Is what I'm wearing/doing grossing anyone out?

Actually, the first two are all that's applicable; but for some reason, the teens seem to really latch on to the third one.

Their knowledge of their liberty in Christ, and their knowledge of the bible, and their conscience, is what's going to drive them to answer those questions.

And that's really all that any of us can lean upon, too.

Final thought. We have a saying in the military: If you don't want to hear the answer, don't ask the question. How does this translate to the subject at hand? Don't ask for standards in dress and stuff; you'll get them.

The Bible mentions how a woman should dress.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

The problem is with the word modest. It is subjective to a point. The Bible does not list what specific items are appropriate and which are not. I think He expected us to have some common sense. You can argue about it all day long, it will still have to be answered upon what your personal conviction as to what is modest and what is not.

Some churches may require certain things and that is their option, just remember, that submitting to that dress code does not make it right. It also does not make it wrong. Just don't let the dress code become more then what it is.

Just use your brain and cover the rest of yourself! *hehe*

I just have to say that I'm with da Gina. [IMG] I hate shoes! I always wear dresses (well below the knee) to church, but there are sneakers on my feet. I figure I can serve God more cheerfully in comfortable shoes. Not just any sneakers, mind you - clean white sneakers that have never kicked a dog toy to the pooch. :D

I don't wear shoes unless I'm leaving the house either. don't like the restrictive feeling! I guess I'm just a barefoot Mama! :D

Seriously, what Don was saying is correct. Just because I have the freedom in Christ to decide what I believe is right according to the Scriptures, does not give me the right to flaunt it in front of weaker Christians.

Just an example, I wear pants in my home, and to the grocery store in the winter. (This is afterall, the frozen tundra of the north around her!) In the summer, I wear skirts and dresses and jumpers.

It is my liberty to decide what my attire will be, as long as it follows the Bible's standards for modesty. However, If I am going to the church building, or to someones home where I know they do not wear pants, I follow their dress patterns. This isn't hypocrisy, because they know what my standards are. If they come to my home, they may find me in pants if they are unexpected and I am working in the yard or cleaning house.

By the way, what I meant by flaunting it, is saying things outloud to weaker Christians like, "No one is gonna tell me what to do, I can dress however I feel. I've got freedom in Christ!" ;)

"2) Is what I'm wearing/doing causing someone else to stumble?"

Thank you Don. This is very true. I think ladies would be quite surpised at what can make men in todays society stumble. My girlfriend has asked me to speak up if she ever wears anything that I think could cause a person to stumble. I have a couple of times. I have yet to see her wear those clothes again [IMG]

As a teen Christian, I would say Tank-Tops are very innappropriate. They were banned in my middle school.

Never immodest, I have often gotten the raised eyebrows for what I have worn to church in the past. The raised eyebrows were from "traditionalists" who are more concerned about the outward appearance. Sadly enough, they get caught up on so many other things that are unbiblical and binding.

Another bare-footer here. :D I do wear flat, comfortable, loafer type shoes for church though. I am trying to get away from wearing jeans. The problem is that I spend alot of time on the floor with the kids (playing, teaching, changing diapers, etc) which is kind of hard to do in a dress or skirt. But I do love to wear my skirts and jumpers because they are so comfortable. [IMG]

I agree with you, V. That's a hard one. I suppose improper dress for men would possibly be:

*Any clothes that make a man look even remotely feminine

*Any clothes with racial or disparaging messages (Confed flags, black militant propaganda, curse words, racy jokes)

    *Shorts above the knee (?)

That's about all that I can list, and I'm not 100% confident in the impropriety of these kinds of clothing.

What do you think about these types of clothes? Can you think of anymore?

    I feel sorry for you.

What kind of shoes do you think women in the Bible wore? Were they told they weren't good christians because of their shoes? Was the issue of shoes ever brught up in the Bible? If someone has as ick disease of the mind, I can't help them. And I refuse to cater to them or people like you, who like to call names when others aren't a clone of you.

So the best I can say is

    Whatever.........

    Katie,

I'm a barefooter, too. When I do wear shoes, I prefer flip flops and the like that show the feet alot because I find them more comfy. A lot of men (and women) I know think this is "unmanly" or something and therefore unbecoming a Christian. I don't get this "different shoe taste=improper foot apparel=bad Christian example" argument that saved people throw out.

On the other hand, when women put on men's army boots, why don't people chastise them as being "unwomanly"? It's double standard that hurts my soul. :(
