Does your pastor read off note cards, or memorize his/her sermon?

Neither, preaches extemporaneously (without notes or manuscript).

NO. Some people do memorize manuscripts, and this may appear to be extemporaneous delivery. But true extemporaneous delivery is "composed" as it is being delivered.

My pastor types up his sermon notes, but he doesn't preach from them unless he has a total mind freeze.

I write out a manuscript, although I generally only glance at it as I'm preaching.

It must be pointed out that note-free doesn't mean you have absolutely no notes with you in the pulpit. For instance, Joshua's delivery may very well be note free, even though he carries his manuscript with him to the pulpit. To me, the key to delivery is how much eye contact you have with the people, regardless of notes or no notes. I've seen manuscript preachers rarely, if ever, look at their notes, and I've seen guys with only a Bible look down over half the time.

My pastor doesn't use notes or anything. I think he comes with a basic idea of what he wants to say, and then lets the sermon make itself as he goes along.

I think my pastor uses an outline and has a few notes on the outline but not many. My previous pastor did the same. My present pastor studied under my previous pastor so that maybe why the same.

Never. He waits for the Lord to give him the message. I believe it should come from on high.

I have way too much information in a message to go "note free". I usually have 3-4 pages of typed outline.

Greek references, parallel passages, word pictures, illustrations - careful exposition of a passage is a lot of work, and with my "forgetter" working better than my "rememberer", I need these notes.

Also, I work hard at "word-smithing" - crafting sentences and phrases intentionally to drive home a point or clarify the words.

For some, flowing rhetoric comes easy.

    Others just yell louder.

Would you condemn your teacher for coming to class without any notes to teach on a complex and difficult subject? No. He does not want to make a mistake.

    And so with the preacher.

p.s. - Oh yes, I've been preaching since 16 (nearly 38 years) and can "wing it" on any number of topics or passages. But not do a thorough exposition or carefully-crafted wording without a little prep time!!

My previous Pastor carefully and meticulously memorized his sermons because they were JAM PACKED with facts and information. He was definitely of the "Professor" kind. I learned more about History in the 3 years I was preached at by him (LoL preached at) then I learned in my 13 years of schooling!

My current Pastor (I believe) uses an outline with few notes. Sometimes he chucks it aside cuz God laid a different message on his heart moments before he approached the pulpit.

I have come to enjoy both methods or styles of preaching. I do still purchase tapes of sermons from my old Pastor cuz his messages are very studious, etc. My current Pastor is more into life lessons.

Can I just say PRAISE THE LORD for Preachers! They have an awesome task, shepherding the flock, and do so without hesitation! Have you hugged your preacher today?

Bob, I don't know how to tell you this, but we agree completely here. In fact, you saved my making an almost identical post.

Do you think maybe there's hope for me yet ;)?

Dr. Griffin, What's a word picture? This is the first time I've ever heard this term.

Don't know where you heard it, but a word picture is just that. Painting a picture with words.

Today, it is almost a lost art. We HAVE the pictures, videos, etc and are bombarded by the media so that we do not have to imagine or envision anything. It is affecting our children the most.

If I told you about the Ark (Noah) form the Bible, it is pretty cut-and-dried. Cubits, 7 or 2 pairs, and 40-days-and-40-nights.

But if I asked you to close your eyes and let your senses run free. See the dim interior, with just an occasional oil lamp casting shadows in the belly of this man-made whale, over animals so enormous they could crush you like a gnat. Smell the mixture of newly-sawn wood, pitch oozing with salt water, dank feral odors wafting from animal cages, wet and molding hay. Listen to the cacophony of the wolves howling to the clouded moon; of the cry of the loon, the laugh of the hyena, low-pitched groans of a boat as it is tossed without rudder or keel.

Now mix them with the vile juices flowing from your own nauseous belly as the Ark is stricken by massive waves and bounced along the mountain tops like rock shoals. And fear and trust, mingling with your sweat and tears.

Has God forgotten me? Has He cast me adrift in some sort of cosmic chess game, a gambit that failed? When will the rain stop, the waves turn to gentle tides?

Okay, I got carried away. But I just painted a word picture - carfully "word smithed" with correct grammar, vivid adjectives, personal feelings, etc. It brought YOU, the reader, into the very HEART of Shem.

I don't really know if I should be in the "Pastor's Corner" because I'm a Youth Pastor and some don't consider us "real" pastors. Anyway, I type up an outline on and have it in my Bible when I go up to talk, but don't usually need it. I also use Power Point and sometimes just use those notes.

I have "winged it" before, and those have been some of my best, and worst lessons.
