Do we need HIV-positive Sesame Street Muppets?

    As sick as this sounds, I'm not in the least bit surprised--since "Sesame Street" receives alot of government-funding(PBS). More proof of how liberals want the federal government to completely control our public education system. :mad: :confused:

    Actually, "Play With Me Sesame" and "Sesame Too" are on the Noggin channel, which is owned by Nickelodeon. PBS replaced "Sesame Street" years ago with "Barney" and "Teletubbies".

    I believe the Sesame Street character with HIV is for the country of South Africa. It is not for the United States.

    I don't think it's for the US, everyone. The article I read said it was for South Africa.

    It wouldn't bother me one bit if the muppet character were for the U.S. programming.

    It's not about teaching children about sex and/or homosexuality.

    For pity's sake!! It's for teaching compassion.

    It's for giving children with HIV and AIDS someone to identify with as a child. And it's for teaching children who blessed by God not to have it that it's alright to be friends with and love other children who do have it.

    I don't think that some of you are aware of the epidemic of children with HIV and AIDS. And you don't have to go to another continent around the world to see it.

    Although, I don't want to dismiss the overwhelming magnitude of South Africans who suffer.

    I can't remember the number of children in South Africa who are AIDS orphans and who have HIV themselves. I've seen the stats on it, and it's staggering.

    They are sick themselves and have no parents to raise them because their parents are dead from AIDS. It's pathetic.

    And all we do is sit around here in the comfort of our chair and in the intellectually unchallenged universe of the computer world and work ourselves into a state of extremist paranoia and get our underwear in a knot over someone even mentioning the word HIV in front of children.

    Hmmm...

    ...maybe the pathos isn't all confined to South Africa.

    People used to be the same way about cancer.
    BTW, Sesame Street is the only program my little girl is allowed to watch. I don't think the values I see demonstrated on the show would offend anyone here-well, at least it would not offend 95% of us.

    The way I heard it the HIV muppet would be presented in Africa not in the United States. Is this neccesary? Yes I believe that in a country so ravaged by the disease it seems reasonable to have a Sesame street character with HIV.

    Why don't they have an Oscar with cancer?

    Why don't they have an Elmo that's mentally challenged?

    Why don't they have an Ernie that is born without a limb?

    Why don't they have a Bert that is blind?

    Why don't they have a Grover that is deaf?

    Why do they have to use a disease that people have a choice on getting because of their sinful behavior?

    Actually, they do have muppets with other "conditions". There is a blind muppet, some are mute, wheelchair, etc.

    Many people have aids through no sinful act, or fault of their own. Some people get cancer because of sinful acts - why do AIDS victims not get the same compassion as cancer victims? I think the answer is clear. :(

    I watch the show with my daughter. They do have children and adult "regulars" on the show with a variety of disabilities.
    As for your assertation that people have a choice on whether or not they get HIV, do a little research. Lots of kids, especially in Africa, are born with AIDS or get it through no fault of their own (blood transfusions, contaminated needles, rape, etc.). There is a belief in many countires that sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. So many men rape young virgins to "cure" themselves. In some places the infection rate is 20%!
    In Atlanta, I recently prosecuted a woman for forcibly pimping out her own 13-year-old daughter until the girl got AIDS. What choice did she have?

    Here is some further background on the African situation. Yes, AIDS is spread through sin. Initially, in Africa, the sin was hetrosexual adultery via prostitution. (Hubby is a truck driver/migrant worker. Away from home for an extended period of time, he seeks out the services of one of the local working girls. He comes home and spends some time with his wife.) That was the begining scenerio for the African pandemic. With the absence of the medical infrastrucure we know in the West, AIDS spread without notice.

    Now, what does this mean to the topic at hand? It means that wives through no fault or sin of their own acquired AIDS. It means their post-infection children were exposed to the virus and were infected in the womb. While,it means that yes in the first world the incidence of pediatric AIDS is now relatively small. It also means that in Africa and the rest of the third world pediatric AIDS is going to pretty much wipe out a generation or more. The West hasn't seen this kind of devastation since the Black Plague.

    I guess if I caught aids through a needle stick (I am a registered nurse) I would have caught it by sin too.


    Aids can be spread by other means then just sin. Get over yourself. you make me sick when you say that aids is caused by sin! So can cancer ie cervical cancer is usually caused by PID or having more then one sexually partner, If you want to talk about diseases that can be related too STD I can name quiet a few.

    Here's a better question...do we need Sesame Street Muppets? NO! It's just more socialistic government propaganda brainwashing...wake up America! :(
