Prevenient grace originally came into the argument between Augustine and Pelagius. Pelagius believed that God had given every human enough grace to bring them back to neutral standing and therefore they could choose God. He was deemed a heretic. Apparently, the church figured he ignored the Scriptures that call all humans (except believers) enemies of God.

In our minds, we chose God. But the Bible tells us that "we love Him because He first loved us." This love is a special love. Surely, Helen, you love your children more than your neighbors. Do you love your children more than the terrorists who blew up the twin towers? According to the Bible, the unbelieving world disgusts God as much as the terrorists disgust us. God has a special love reserved for His elect. (See Colossians 3:12 to see where election and love are combined.) God loves those in heaven more than He loves those in hell. The Bible says God is angry with the wicked all day long. We must not think that for God to be love, he is required to love every person equally. This is not what the Bible presents.
