    I have been lurking on the BB for awhile, and really enjoy the discussions here. I had a question and was wondering if you all could help.

    Joshua 2
    Rahab tells an untruth to save the spies in this chapter. She is later comended for her actions in James 2:25. How can a lie be comended?

    Thanks for the help Aaron, but it seems the thread you are referring me to is password-protected.

    Click on "my profile" again.

    Click on View/Update Profile

    Scroll to Default Topic View

    Select the option that says "Show all topics."

    Click on "Update Profile."

    Then try it again.

    Sorry about all the trouble. The BB was invaded by robots, and the only way to keep the Board from going down when they attempted to index the archive forums was to make them private.

    I couldnt get your link to work from here, so I went into the 2001 archive and put it in there. Found the topic just like that. Sorry for all the trouble, thanks for the pointing me in the right direction Aaron. Still don't know why I couldn't access it from here though.

    James 2:25 does not commend her for lying but for giving lodging the the spies.
    This can be compared to the midwives of Exodus Ch. 1 who lied to pharoah to save the lives of the Hebrew children and were rewarded by God with families of their own.
    It was not the lie they were rewarded for but their righteous act.

    Isn't this exactly the way God deals with us?
    He remembers our sins no more and rewards our good deeds.

    Here is an experiment: Next time your wife asks you "Does this dress make me look fat",tell her "no dear, nothing makes you look fat". (Note reaction)

    Then as usual later she will ask you again "Does this dress make me look fat?", this time say "Why yes it does. Espesially from behind." (Note reaction)

    I say all that to say this: Sometimes diplomacy is better than.......well.....nondiplomacy.

    If Rahab should not have lied, then she sinned.

    If Rahab sinned, then she showed a fundamental lack of faith, since true faith (assuming her lying was wrong)would have told the truth and trusted God.

    If Rahab showed a fundamental lack of faith, she should not be in Hebrews 11 as an example of faith in the very act that involved her in a lie.

    Rahab's lie was not sinful. killing is sometimes not sinful. Same with lying.

    Can a Christian be in a witness protection program? hey will have to not only tell, but live lies.

    Can a Christian be an undercover agent? Do undercover agents involve themselves in sin by bature of their occupation?

    I think the presupposition that every falsehood is sinful is overly simplistic.

    Didn't David lie to get the shewbread?
    Would you say David showed a fundamental lack of faith? Would you say that David didn't trust God?
    Or Abraham when he lied and said that Sarah was his sister?
    Abraham lied in a tough situation and is mentioned in the Faith chapter.
    It was a lie that showed a lack of trust in God to protect them.

    It occurred to me at work today, presbuteros, that you said......
    ===========
    If Rahab sinned, then she showed a fundamental lack of faith,...
    ===========

    She WAS a prostitute.

    She was righteous for her faith, not for her sinlessness.
    Rahab is the person I use to demonstrate to Mormons that we are saved by faith, not works.
    Those who are saved still sin.
