I am a young baptist pastor. It bothers me that when a Christian from another denomanation moves their membership from that church to a Baptist church many times they are required to be rebaptised. The reason I am bothered by this is we have taken a command from the Bible and chosen to use it in whatever way seems to please us. Just wondering what you all think about this.

Not all baptist churches require rebaptism, and some that do make a clear distinction between the re-baptism of a believer from another faith tradition and someone who has never been baptised.

If the person has been baptised as a believer in another denomination, I can't think of a single reason why they should be baptised again. I can understand good arguments on either side if they were baptised as an infant.

We baptize those who have not been baptized in a church of like faith and order. If a church is not of like faith and order, it lacks authority to administer the Lord's ordinances, which He gave to His churches. [IMG]

Thomas, what causes the lack of athority? If it's infant baptism, I agree with you. If its not baptism by immersion, I agree with you. Even is it is baptism for any other reason than following in obediance to the Lord Jesus Christ. But if you are saying just because they are not baptist they lack athority I must say you are WAY out of line. I look forward to your response.

Thomas, i did not say you said that. I said IF. It did sound like you might have been implying that, thats why I ask. Did not mean to offend you, just asking. I hope this will be fun and serious chat. Remember, I am your Borther in Christ. Could you explain what or who you would not consider baptised under authority to recieve the Lord's supper in the Baptist church?

    1. I did not imply anything. I make a statement which stands on its own merits.

    2. You did not offend me, and to assume you did is a presumption on your part.

    3. I believe a church must be a church belonging to Jesus Christ, founded upon His doctrine, and preaching His gospel in order to have His commission. That is a church of like faith and order. A church not of like faith and order is not His and thusly does not have the authority to administer His ordinances.

There are some Baptists Churches in New Zealand that go further than that. They require a letter from your last Church to make sure you are a good person

quote:
No where in the NT is it commanded that the baptism must be done by immersion. [/QB]

Unless you consider the fact that baptism, by definition, is immersion. It does not mean to sprinkle, or pour. Baptize means to immerse. As Hiscox (I believe) said, to talk about mode of baptism means to talk about doing it forwards or backwards, cold water or warm water, running water or still water. You are right that in that sense, Scripture does not talk about the mode of Baptism.

What does the word Baptize mean? Doesn't it by definition mean immersion?

Since it DOES state in the NT that John the Baptist was baptizing in the Jordan, and in Acts: And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both INTO the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. (Acts 8:38 KJV)

Taking the literal meaning of baptize along with examples, it's doubtful they would have waded into the water, sprinkled some water on the eunuch's head, and used the term meaning "immerse" to describe the event.

Though I am just getting registered and reading this. I agree with Bro. Lee. I am also bothered about the idea of being rebaptised. I believe once saved always saved as also I believe of baptism. This is just my opinion.
