Define what this means to you....

My belief, which is subject to correction, of course, is that the Holy Spirit gives you standards thru conviction and that its different for each and every born again believer...kinda like how DNA is different for each human being. Let me know what ya'll think.

I believe that if you let God correct you and work on your heart you will each time pick up the more biblical standards when you do this. Standards are great to have. Christ had them. Or should I say God has them. [IMG]

That is today's attitude, but truth is always truth and the Holy Spirit has been sent to lead all of us into all truth, not some designer truth made just for us. We are told that we should all be of the same mind and to say the same thing. Where is individuality in that? There is some. We do not have to all wear the same style suit jacket as the Mennonites do, though there is some practical wisdom in being "uniformed." Everyone knows who a Mennonite and an Amish is. I can't say that about Christians and non-Christians. Actually, the world interpets this better than we do. They expect Christians to have higher standards. They also expect us to say and do the same thing. Ever see Star Trek and the Borg? That is their interpretation of us being of the same mind and saying the same thing to a God that is futile to resist. They miss a lot in their concept, butthey have a better grasp on it than some Christians. Why would God have different standards for His children? If I told my daughter to remain chaste, don't smoke and drink, but then on my son's birthday I bought him a box of cigars, a fifth of Jack Daniels and took him to the local harlot to make a man of him I would be attacked and rightly so of having a dual and unfair standard. And yet, that is exactly what we want from God. In fact, we want a poly-standard to fit our desires. Yet, even if we pray for a good thing in the wrong attitude or motive we do not receive the answer to our prayers. God does not play favorites so you get to walk down the beach nekkid and Susie Q doesn't. One house, one set of rules. Sadly, we have no clue how to ascertain them since we think all conviction is some sort of mystical feeling thang and if I say that you are not modest in your attire, I am easily dismissed by "That is you conviction, not mine" when you have nothing bit feeling to prove your conviction. Indeed, the Word reprove is used in the KJV and it is used to convict or tell a fault to someone. So, preachers are to use the Word to convict a person or convince them that they are wrong. When you say you are not convicted, it may mean you have no conscience to receive conviction or you are not paying attention to the Word. In fact, your very chafing against a standard may well be the conviction that God is giving you since as I said it is our nature to resist being told what to do by God or anyone else. Yes, some lads go wany overboard and have no Scripture to back up what they are preaching. You mentioned that your pastor was a Hylesite and they canbe dictatorial without being able to be approached or challenged since they are the anointed and God's man. However, not all are like that. Have you asked the pastor for some biblical basis for his application of the Scriptural truth of modesty? Have you actually done any study to prove your "lack of conviction?" If so, take your study to him and if not, do some before you just toss out the baby with the bath water.

Indeed, when God does work in the "dna" as you put it that means He is preparing someone to do something special. Interestingly, like Samson, the restrictions get tight not looser. We are to seek holiness not how close to the world can we be and still be saved. We are to be in the world but not of the world and the expression of that should be seen in all areas of our lives not just the ones we like to pick and choose under the guise of liberty.

All right now, y'all are getting scary that is four positive responses on two messages. I am expecting the Rapture anytime now!!! There are times that I feel like I am communicating with aliens from another dimension on here. The Black preacher I was listening to yesterday said, "Surely somebody in here besides me knows what I am talking about." He used that and "Won't anybody pray with me?" when he thought he should have had an amen.

I told my Sunday School class this morning that it makes my head nearly blow off when I hear some of the stuff people believe that call themselves Baptists. I expect some of this stuff from lost people or in denominations where the Readers Digest would go over as well as the Bible on a Sunday morning, but I thought maybe the Baptists would be the last bastion against error and heresy, but too many have already deserted and others are changing uniforms as we speak. It is a very sad thing considering Baptists had a great part in founding this country and now it looks like a lot of the are going to have a great part in its ruination and damnation.

My pastor said, it right the other day. "I can get along with a saved Presbyterian than a lost Baptist." I would had a carnal or liberal one. As screwed up as many Presbyterians are it is a shame when Dr. James Kennedy is more on target than a lot of the Baptists. The end is surely near.

If you note the Catagories of Truth I laid out in the thread of the same name, you would see the reason we agree with Pastor Kennedy. We at least agree on all of Catagory 1 and some of Catagories 2 and 3. With many Baptists, we barely agree on 1 and some of 2. Agreement on Catagory 3 is a litte more touch and go.

I have only one "standard" and that is the word of God. It is the "guide-on" to which our lives are adjusted. A "conviction" is when the Holy Spirit finds me guilty of violating some teaching of His word, and I acknowledge that error and correct my life accordingly. If you can't point to it in the bible it is not a "conviction" but a preference. [IMG]

I agree with DocCas...The Holy Spirit convicts through His Word, nothing else. We have standards based on the Word of God and those convictions should be the same for all who are believers.

If it is not a biblcal command or teaching,it is just a choice we have. [IMG]

The standard is ALWAYS Scripture - never our subjective thoughts or feelings.

    Rev. G,
I understand your reasoning here. I have tried to
tell Granny Gumbo this. I hope she will take heed to
what you have to say about this subject.
She has many feelings about wearing "orange"
yet, I have never seen this in the scriptures! I seem to think these are just her own "feelings" and "thoughts"....What do you think?
Granny is probably snoozing now, and will not even read this!! [IMG]
So, speak your mind quickly!!! [IMG]

The way it seems to me the various standards are is sort of like 'kind' in Genesis. There is the basic biblical standard. But there is also enough room in it for some variations. Sort of alike all different kinds of dogs are still dogs.

I think the multiple threads of women's clothing is an excellent example. We agree on modesty and not looking like a guy. That's the biblical mandate. But what that means for each generation and culture might be a little different.

The Two Commandments of Christ leave all kinds of room for leading by the Holy Spirit in various ways according to person and situation. But always, if a person is obedient to the Holy Spirit, the person will be thinking, saying, and doing that which shows both love for God and love for one's neighbor. I might bake a pie; you might help move furniture. I might keep an eye on a fractious two-year-old so his mommy can sleep and you might spend special time in prayer for her.

As a result, we need to be very careful about criticizing one another regarding how we are being led by the Holy Spirit. Not everyone is a front-line soldier, not everyone is a chef getting food ready, and not everyone is a product of Western culture!

God's standards allow an awful lot of room for variation in a number of areas. There will be NO variation on the Ten Commandments, obviously, but there is a lot in an awful lot of other areas.
