Did Jesus have long hair?

    I would just like to hear your point of view on this. (No web links) Do you think Jesus had long or short hair? Please tell me why you think so.

    I think he had a 6 inch spiked mohawk that was dyed in all the colors of the rainbow. [​IMG]

    Seriously, I don't know. I really don't care.

    The Roman tradition was short hair and no facial hair for adult men (yes, men under 18 were allowed to have facial hair). However, the Jewish custom was long hair and facial hair. So IMO, Jesus had long hair and facial hair.

    for what it's worth, it's almost impossible to wear a pair of tefillin (phylacteries) with long hair.

    We can be assured that Jesus had a beard at the time of his crucifixion since the Roman soldiers pulled it out during the pre-crucifixion scourging (torture).

    As far as long hair goes, I don't know if anyone can say anything about it with any certainty.

    I doesn't really matter to me.

    Well I'm not takin' any chances, guys.
    (In case it becomes a rule to get to heaven).

    I'm keeping my short beard and medium length hair
    just to satisfy all the lawkeepers who peer over my shoulder.

    I'm also resting on Saturday AND Sunday to qualify
    there. I'm gonna eat meat when those around me do and not
    eat meat when those around me do and preach faith/works
    fourteen different ways to cover all those bases and..................

    1Cr 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

    That's interesting, because Numbers 6:5 & 7 discuss the Nazarite vows of not cutting hair. 2 Kings 1:8 and 2 Samuel 14:25-26 praise long hair.

    In 1 Corinthians 11:14 the Greek word translated "long hair" is komao which means tresses of hair or locks. It comes from the root word meaning "to take care of" which indicates some kind of preparation to make the hair appear in tresses. Komao appears only three times in the Bible, all in 1Cor 11. The usual word for hair is thrix. I believe that Paul was referring to some pagan practices of fixing the hair and this is what he is condemning for men, although condoning for women. If Paul were teaching that long hair (generally) is wrong, then he would be contradicting Scripture.

    Jesus was a Nazarene, not a Nazarite

    2 Kings tell that Elijah was a "hairy" man, not stating it was long. A few chapters further and you'll see reference to Elisha. He was a bald man, so that doesn't make baldness the way of the Jews, either.

    2 Samuel is referring to Absalom, who was quite prowd of himself and his looks. He would be a bad example of a Jew following the Law.

    The Corinthians did have a problem with hair and headcoverings, and for a man to have "long" hair was a disgrace. The emphasis is on the length of the "whatever style" of hair that is being refered to, as is carried on to the women who have the "long" hair for her glory.

    Jesus most likely had short hair.

    I don't think we know how long is long, all we have is our own opinions. No certain length is given in 1Cor. I think He had long hair, but that doesn't have to mean 3 feet long either.

    What's your definition of long? It varies from culture to culture and scripture doesn't specify what long or short is.

    I agree with your summation! Like those silly wigs the English wore! All those crazy curls and coufs.

    Although Jesus probably had short hair.

    My brother is a carpenter. He said it is really hard to do his job with ANY hair length because it gets in the eyes and you cant see.

    Did they have scrunchies back then?

    I would say it is broader than that! It varies from person to person!

    My mom thinks that if it is touching the collar it is long.

    My First Shirt at my last base thought that if it was past the natural 'hair growth line' it was long.

    I really don't know what I would consider 'shamefully' long hair!

    I haven't ever really thought of it.

    When I was mixed up with the IFB, I thought anything longer than 'high and tight' was long. But that was based on someone elses opinion.

    Thats what I was thinking of. Whether by culture or by person, it varies,a dn the bible is not specific. When have a certain length men or women have to have their hair it is not based on the bible as the length is not mentioned.
    Wonder if it is left to indivual to decide? Any thoughts?

    that's true, but after the vow was complete the nazarite had to give a sin offering [​IMG]

    Deut 22:5 "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God."

    God intended for men and women to look different.
    Men should grow beards and have short hair, and women should have long hair (at least shoulder length). None of this unisex look!

    From what I have heard, not since the tenth century do you find pictures of Jesus having long hair(Shoulder length or longer). Most likely they wanted to feminize Him.

    Under the law the young men polled their hair which means it was cut short but the sides of the hair was kept long. Strange look but this is what is taught in the Old Testament.

    Usually when men reached a different older age they just polled their hair completely or cut it short.

    Believe it or not, it was the Jewish custom for men to typically keep their heads covered to show devotion to God. It was not a hard and fast rule, but it was a custom. There's evidence that the Jewish men tied their hair back and covered them with scarf-type head coverings. Headcoverings by both men and women are often associated with cultures in mediterranean climates, since weather and sun are a factor.

    Of course, there's also the question of what constitutes long hair. Shoulder length? Collar length? Bum length? It was not uncommon for Jewish men of the day to have shoulder length hair, but whether that was considered "long" or not by Paul is a matter of speculation. I refer back to my previous post about tresses.

    Interesting thread. I don't know what the length of Jesus' hair was....but I do know that He is altogether lovely however he looked in the flesh.........

    Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 2Cor. 5
