I believe our preaching would be far more enhanced if we concentrated our efforts on simply memorizing Scripture from the KJV, or whatever Bible you use. It is the Word of God (in the language of the people) that is "alive, powerful, sharper than any twoedged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul
and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and
is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of
the heart." Quoting that to your congregation in Greek will have no effect at all. Paul talks of speaking in tongues in 1Cor.14. It is comparable to that. He warns against it because if one speaks in an unknown tongue he speaks in mysteries, and there is no understanding.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it was Ron Comfort who had the entire New Testament memorized. Those who have much Scripture memmorized usually make more powerful preachers.
The Greek New Testament itself was written in the Koine Greek--the Greek of the common person, so that the common person could understand it. That in itself should be a lesson to us.

    Ben,

Where exactly do you work? What do you do for a living? I, for one, did learn Hebrew when I was in Seminary. I have always wanted to learn Greek and have done some self study on my own since I never finished seminary. But, the reality is, many people, myself included, are not afraid of hard work. Many of us don't have the luxury of sitting around and studying in a college library half the day. We have families. We have children. We have jobs and careers which we work very hard at doing. I'll admit, I enjoyed sitting in the library all day for hours on end studying the Bible, Hebrew, and the ministry. But, those days are over for me. And those days may not ever come for many people. I think it would be good if we do not look down on others because they don't have the same opportunities as we do. We should also not exhibit a better than thou attitude because we have had these experiences. Perhaps, that is not your intent. But, you might consider re-reading some of your posts and re-thinking the way you say things.

Obviously Ben my last post was to make a point.

With your views on non-denominationalism what would you do with those who disagree with your views on the languages? Are they welcome as equal members in your "church" or will they always be lesser members until they are as intelligent as you are?

Consider softening your views Ben, it is harsh statements like you have made in this thread which are the origins of the denominations which you feel so strongly about.

All Christians are equal unver Elohim. I mearly stated my oppinion as a sugestion that we are far too undereducated as Christians. That we would be better off handeling scripture in the original languages. As for my job I am a Theatrical Lighting Designer. I design around 30-40 showes a year all through out the USA. I am studying to be a high school history teacher. I am 23 and going to California Baptist University.

    Ben,

My feeling is that you may have different standards for qualified servants than God does. How many of the 12 apostles were academically qualified for the task? Also, have a quick look at 1 Corinthians 1v26-31 - (in either English or Greek [IMG] ) for God's requirements for service.

That is a straw Man argument about the apostles. They did not have to abuility to learn the languages. Actualy since they were all JEWS they knew the scripture.

They didn't have the ability?!?!?! Why not?? They all spoke Aramaic, not Hebrew.

BTW, you persist in using "Elohim" for God's name. Are you aware that elohim can also refer to any god? If you really want to use a name for God other than God why not use YHWH?

God used poor, ignorant fishermen and others to turn the world upside down.

And how do you explain the 1 Corinthians passage?

You are going to have to do better than just attack my questions as staw men Ben.

Again all of this is just a good idea. I do not understand why you are trying to say that I think ever Christian must read in the original language. All I have ever said is that it is a good idea and would cause less confusion if we knew the original intent of scripture. To me this is not legalism it is just a peace of good advice.

The small portion in the letter to Corinth is about being vainful about your knowledge. I understand that we do not have to be the smartest people in the world. But I do think that it is a good idea for us all to learn the original languages. You can disagree with me that is fine. You seem too emotional about this issue, I do not know why. Possibly you are just scared to know what the bible actually says.

BTW . . . my use of Elohim is just like your use of God. They are both empty names for the one true god, YHVH. since this name should not be used out of FEAR of him or her, we should use Hashem or another name for god.

I mentioned that I am WAY too old to learn Greek and Hebrew well enough to understand it when I read - I fully study passages in the languages using language aids.

I loved your accusation that I am afraid to know what the Bible says - cute attack!

Just out of curiosity - I assume that you have the Bible memorised in the original languages?

    Ben,

I think I am going to follow the lead of the rest and leave you to your youthful ravings.

    Oh to be young again!

Well, I’ve posted something similar in another thread, so I may as well post it here.
