Gen 1:3 - what is that Light?

    Hello dear,

    Does anyone have an acceptable commentary on Gen 3:1? What was that light that God created here, since it can not mean the sun which was created later...? Anyone have any idea?

    At the end of the age, we will be in another situation where there is light but no sun. In Revelation, it says that God or, more specifically, His glory will be their light. Other verses teach that God is light. How does this relate to Genesis 1:3? Well, my view is that God created light to display His glory. Maybe that light was His glory like it will be in the future, I don’t know. In any event, without light, we would not see the glory of God in creation (cf., Ps. 19). In the same way, without illumination, we would not see the glory of God in Scripture (cf. 2 Cor. 4). As His creation, we should reflect God’s glory in our lives.

    Dear Andy,

    Thank you for the insight, it was helpful. I am aware about the eternal state of glory that awaits us and that God will be the eternal light that will be brighter than the sun. I don't think we have an issue understanding those revelation passages.

    My question though is related to Gen 1 only. It makes sense that God is light and that in Him there is no darkness. Even so, if the light in Gen 1:3 relates to His own light, why did He still have to say 'Let there be light'? Not that is an essential issue, but I was just currious...

    Because we will never see God's glory, even in general revelation, without His illumination. I think 2 Cor. 4:4-6 is instructive in this regard, although here it refers to special revelation:

    In Genesis 1:2, all we had was darkness, just as in 2Cor.4:4 all we have is spiritual blindness. Without God saying, "Let there be light," we would have no understanding of His glory at all. Perhaps the reason for the creation of light before the sun, moon, and stars was to emphasize the supernatural necessity of this illumination?

    Just my thoughts, early on a Sat. morning.
