If you are looking for great deals on ESV Bibles, you CANNOT get a better price than at the Westminster Seminary Bookstore. Of course, Deadman, you cannot exchange your gift from your wife here [IMG]

dale, are you accusing the SBC of trying to turn a profit from the HCSB?

I have to say I am starting to agree with your previous statement about the ESV. I've been reading since I got the e-Sword module and am thinking of getting a hardcopy for myself. [IMG]
</font>[/QUOTE]I was glad to see HCSB follow ESV and allow the translation to be distributed on E-Sword for free, but disappointed to find they had a change of heart recently. What do they have to lose besides royalties? Who doesn't try to make a profit from their Bible publishing? (Or were you just being sarcastic??)

What is so nice about HCSB is their binding and design. Their Minister's Bible is beautifully designed! However, I judge the translation not by the cover (however tempting) [IMG] . Again, they have a large publishinghouse beind them so they can afford it, but ESV said, though they have several different formats in mind, each each new typeset will cost them 50,000 dollars to start up so moving along that line will take them time.

Using computers, type setting books does not cost 50K each time anymore. We do huge professional tech manuals for a tiny percentage of that.

Does that including proofreading? Although I read that blog, I am not into the ecomomics of publishing so would not be able to respond one way or another. What I would like to see from them is an ESV wide-margin Bible (and I mean WIDE all around), but they said it will be some time before that happens.

I may be in luck ... a quick scan of the gifts with my name on them has detected no boxes the right size to be that NASB Open Bible. I may be in luck! With three kids and one on the way, she won't bother putting stuff in bigger boxes to throw me off. So I'm in good shape!

Well, I hope I don't have to admit that but a second sweep of the forementioned wrapped gifts has not indicated any changes from my previous assessment. I have to admit I've never hoped not to get something before.

My wife has been known to wrap trinkets in elephant-size boxes and tiny pieces of large devices in miniscule boxes. You ain't out of the woods yet.

I have heard nothing but praises regarding the ESV. If you had to find something not to like about it, what would it be? (Just curious!) [IMG]

You're right. I'm not out of the woods yet. There are two packages that could be disguised as something other than a bible. But we'll be opening them tonight so the countdown is on!

The binding. I admit after using it so much the leather became somewhat rubbery (which is not bad in itself) but when I first bought it, it was very stiff. They have been taking much advice from other experts in this field and has been adjusting this problem.

However, one of the world's top Bible bindery, Allan's, has taken up the task for ESV and one cannot complain that quality binding is not available for it. Sad to say that they are sold out for Christmas and should have a new batch by March.

That's good to hear. The binding issue has been going on a while.

When did Allan's take it over? I'm hoping my copy is one of theirs.

    Thanks.

I may have not made myself clear. Allan's did not take over the binding, the just were given permission to do a binding of ESV's classic reference Bible. Crossway still does the general binding but has improved the technique since I bought mine.

Allan's ESV Bible sells for 80 British Pounds (approximately $142 including S/H).

I'm happy to announce that I did not receive any bible this Christmas and, feeling the mood to be right, have informed my beloved of the inbound package. She couldn't have cared less so Merry Christmas to me! In fact, she told me I ought to consider the Reformation Study Bible in ESV! One of her friends from her bible study group that meets on Tuesdays uses one and my wife really like it!

TCassidy, after our previous exchange on this topic, I contacted ThomasNelson.com in regard to the ASV copy I purchsed in the 1980s. Here is the reply I received:

Your statement that Nelson's version was out of print after 1929 is obviously based on misinformation you received from some erroneous source.
