    Are There Miracles Today?

I have heard this question asked a lot lately by people.

I think that if we say God is the same yesterday as He is today, then wouldn't miracles today, be the same as yesterday?

I, for one, do not see why. "Miracles today be the same as yesterday?"... like parting of the Red Sea? a widow's vat of flour never running out? lightning striking the soaked wood for a sacrifice? an 'unauthorized' man touching the ark and being struck dead? the axehead floating in the river because it was borrowed and slipped off the handle?... Why would these thing, "same as yesterday" (your words), be happening today?

The biblical (para)phrase you refer to-- God is the same yesterday and today-- is often read and applied differently than what it actually says. He IS the same-- that does not mean He has to DO the same.

    Sister Sherrie,

Miracles---happen every day!! But the miracles I see are different than most miracles that people are lookin' for--see, far too often folks are lookin' for the dramatic miracle--and get fixed on the dramatic until the dramatic has to constantly be becomin' more dramatic all the time! Until only the most dramatic will be what they come to see!

If you want to see drama walkin' across the stage after the report by the announcer says--"Brother So & So! This is Sister Sherrie! The Sister has been ailin' with the stomach cramps since birth and has since then accumulated a severe limp in her right and left hip over the past few years! Besides all that--she now has the Seven Years Itch!"---and low and behold---Sherrie is cured---

If you want me to go see those kinds of miracles--those that can be explained away by a ten year old--you'll have to drive along without me---

But on the other hand--if you have a couple of cups of "Cool Water" and you want to give them out "In the Name of a Disciple"---I'll tag along!! Mercy, If you get good at handin' out water in the name of a Disciple---just think what you can do handin' um out in the name of Jesus???!! Huh!!

Your Southern Baptist preachin', Sure Shootin' buddy!

I was not meaning miracles per-say the above. But an example maybe could be:

A man in Hungry is big and very powerful, strength wise. His family fears his strength and abuse, and fellow workers also know his scorn. The town people know this is not a man whose anger is to contend with, then one day everyone wakes up and realizes this man is not the same abusive man. He has changed. He has accepted Jesus and lives to tell all that he meets who Jesus is. He holds out his hand. And while he does, you can see the strength, yet when he touches, there is the gentleness of a lamb.

( Barnabas, hope you don't mind me using this story as an example, I looked for it to post and cannot find it again)

    Is this a miracle?

    Luke 5:22-26

:22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

:23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

:24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

:25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

:26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

    Miracles happen every day!

Every time someone receives the "new birth," it's a miracle!

Every time a baby is born, it is a miracle of new life!

And every time a seed is planted and bursts into a plant, it is a miracle!

Every time the doctor says, "I don't know where the tumor went, it was there on the last scan." That is a miracle!

Each time an alcoholic or drug abuser turns their heart over to Jesus and He delivers them from the chains that bind them, that is a miracle!

Every time there is an "almost" car accident or other kind of tragic event that is somehow prevented from happening to us, that is a miracle!

Any time when all medical hope for survival is gone and the tubes & wires are pulled off the patient, but the patient survives and recovers, that is a miracle!

During coronary bypass surgery, the heart is stopped and cooled during the surgery so the bypass grafts can be sewn on a nonbeating heart. And every time those crossclamps are released & the heart is rewarmed & blood flow is restored and that heart begins to beat all on its own, back to it's normal electrical rhythm, that...that there is a miracle!

And when God says He will supply all of our needs (including financial), and our outgo is more than our income but we go ahead & tithe & all the money we need for everything is there anyway..that's a miracle!

Sometimes things we take for granted are really miracles but we don't see that.

Sometimes miracles of healing & deliverence occur in a more obvious or dramatic way in foreign countries, where people are more open to recognizing the power of what the Holy Spirit is able to do. The Internet is full of such stories from missionaries. In the West, we tend to be more skeptical.

Do I believe miracles happen today? AMEN! :D

    I'll second that, SheEagle! [IMG]

Sherrie, I think it's a miracle that I came to Christ in the way I did, and that He's the very focus of my existence. Not a minute goes by that I don't have the Lord on my mind.

"Every time the doctor says, "I don't know where the tumor went, it was there on the last scan." That is a miracle!" My cousin was blind for a few years. She went from doctor to doctor to doctor. There was no help for her. Suddenly she could see again. Not a one of those doctors can explain it.

    Everyday there are miracles. Amen.
God CAN/MAY intervene and do the miraculous as He wills and we ought not "put Him in a box". Amen.

But the "rush" of miracles - big name events - have taken place in only three eras of history, each about 40 years.

    Exodus/Conquest
    Elijah/Elisha
    Life of Christ/Early Church

Think we WILL see a fourth era, during the Great Tribulation/Second Coming.

Of course, there are the occasional miracles in other time periods (Genesis, Daniel come to mind). And today.

If the definition of Miracle is something that can't be completly explained, then some part of the root cause of every effect in existence is a miracle. Thus, everything is at least based on a miracle. [IMG]

I think one source of confusion is that we often define miracles differently. I fully understand what people mean when they say that the birth of a baby is miraculous, or that full life springing from a planted seed is miraculous. I agree that these things are full of wonder and awe-inspiring. But I don't use the term "miracle" to refer to those types of things, because what I see in the Bible as that which is considered a miracle, is where the laws of nature are set aside, and something operates in a manner contrary to natural law or what is normally expected - such as the Red Sea standing up and the ground being dry, a dead body that should begin to decay coming back to life, the iron head of axe floating to the top of the water, fire coming down out of heaven and consuming a water-saturated offering, etc. I don't see these kinds of miracles happening every day, nor I do I see them happening every day in the Bible. Major spurts of such events seem to be confined to particular times and/or particular people.

If God needs to work a miracle to do what He wants to do, He will. It is all in God's hands ... He can do anything.

As has been said by others, Spiritual Life is a miracle, physical life is a miracle, the changing of hearts and minds is a miracle, and if God wants to He will part the Red (or any other colour) sea to deliver His people.
The important thing to remember is that miracles are the work of God, not caused by the wishful thinking or acts of people - no miracles on demand.
    Regards
    Bob

Those who refuse to see the works of God's wonder today refuse to see God.

Miracles have always happenned. They happenned then, they happen now, they'll happen in the future. A miracle is not a work of magic. God doesn't do magic. A miracle is a work of wonder. God does those. We've been able to explain many miracles via science and technology. But having an explanation does not make these things any less of a miracle.

    Johnv.....so true.

Post it I have to agree with you.

I am probably only one of few who will openly admit that I believe that there are those who can heal with a touch. And not those on TV to make a buck. But those who can, we never hear about. Because it was not meant to be a gimmick. And they do those things according to Gods plan.

One definition of miracle is as follows:

"A miracle is an event palpable to the senses, produced for a religious purpose by the immediate agency of God; an event therefore which, though not contravening any law of nature, the laws of nature, if fully known, would not without this agency of God be competent to explain." A.H. Strong, Systematic Theology, p.117

Absolutley. I have been healed, and I know many others that Have. Hopefully the greatest miracle happens often at your church, that somebody accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

I believe God preforms new miracles every day. Some times we don't notice that they truely are.One of my dear friends had her new baby(4 days old)at church Sunday as I held this precious little one I was reminded of that this little one was a mircle, that God still loves us. And he's still as interested in us today as he was with Adam and Eve.

Yesterday, my wife and daughter went to a friend's house to say goodby to their daughter. This friend's daughter is only 13 years old. She is suffering with Down Syndrome and is dying of cancer. The mom had went just days earlier to buy her daughter's funeral dress. Now they are just waiting around for her to die. Where is her miracle?

Because of incidents like this, which are repeated many times each day in this world, it is difficult to believe that miracles, like those recorded in the Bible, are still happening today.

A lot of people saw only terrible things in Sept 11th but miracles happened throughout that day. God was working hard to delay people from getting to the towers, He saved many in the towers, He made it possible for some on the planes to call home. The buildings could have been full of people like usual but they were not.

And their has been great fruit after this disaster by hearing the testimonies of the Christians that didn't survive told by wifes and family.

Another side note: The Lord healed a woman in our small rural baptist church last summer.

ANd for those that have a tough timing believing that miracles don't exist at this modern time... I always pray asking that the Lord heals but if it is not your will Lord..........
Because the Lord's plan is beyond our small human comprehension.
I have been praying for our Local UPS driver he has three kids all under six and a young wife and he has Leukemia....imagine that road to hoe. But I have been praying diligently that the Lord heal this man, (and many churches also) because the power of prayer is amazing. But I also pray that if its not the Lords will then I pray to give the family strength to continue on.

    May God Bless

    Jon
